Violent games make you fick, says German study
February 18th, 2008 @ 15:45

According to this, a German study has found that consumption of violent media – including violent videogames – has a direct impact on a child’s school grades.
The German grading system runs from one to six, one being the highest and six the lowest. The study found that boys that played games rated for 16 year-olds and older were 0.1 to 0.5 below the national average, while those that played games rated for 18 year-olds and over were 0.3 to 0.66 below the national average. Those that didn’t play games were, on average, slightly higher than the national median.
Violent games, therefore, make you stupid and train you to kill people. Really, who would have though that?

Doesn’t this just prove that less intelligent people are more likely to play games than study?

It could also prove that playing games instead of doing your homework makes you less good at school.

Ths study does not say that violent games/media have bad effect on your grades but that too much media consumption in general has a negetive affect.

Is that part about the grades incorrect?
February 18th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
It isn’t actually. The highest grade is one and the lowest 6

Oh dear. I’ll change that. Thanks.

Plus, a student who plays 18+ titles also plays the 16+ ones as well, likely eschewing even more schoolwork for more shooty-bang-bang.
Also, most titles that get a rating restricting it to a ‘mature’ audience often aren’t as cerebrally engaging. If say the mature games were along the lines of ‘Professor Layton and the Hunter S Thompson Affair’ I’m sure that the trend would be reversed.

“Ths study does not say that violent games/media have bad effect on your grades but that too much media consumption in general has a negetive affect.”
No, the study does say that. The KFN put out a press release summarising its findings, saying the following:
“Je mehr Zeit Schuellrinnen und Schueller mit Medienkonsum verbringen under je brutaler dessen Inhalte sind, desto schlechter fallen die Schulnoten aus.”
Or in English: “The more time students spend consuming media and the more brutal its content is, the worse their school grades are.”

So does this mean that we should all buy our kids Brain Training so that they get straight A’s??
Maybe he’s secretly on Dr Kawashima’s pay roll…

@Voice of reason: Oh, true. I must have overheard that part then when they said that in the news.
Anyway it’s still a mixture of both that has the negative effect and I would highly doubt that if you play a violent game from time to time it has a negative impact on your intelligence.

Isn’t the link the parents? Parents stupid enough to let their kids play 18+ games have simply passed on their stupidity?

Surely if you consume media instead of doing homework it’s going to affect your grades. I can believe that, but the suggestion that the level of violence in the media you consume affects your intellectual ability sounds a little far fetched to me.
