GDC: Mysterious XNA sheet causes great excitement
February 19th, 2008 @ 07:12

Seriously. In the Moscone Center’s North Hall, a white sheet has been hung from the ceiling to conceal something XNA-related. That’s it. It’s assumed that the sheet will be removed after Microsoft’s John Schappert does his keynote - “A Future Wide Open: Unleashing the Creative Community” - on Wednesday. Like, someone could just walk up to it and pull it back. What’s wrong with journalists these days?

I was thinking the same thing!

It’ll just be some “initiative”. The “YouTube of Games” sounds about right.

nah, I reckon they’ll surprise everyone and offer up the SDK for free, and offer a simple revenue share model for any self published games

The SDK’s already free, innit? I’m sure I tried to make it work once, with no result whatsoever.

XNA is free to download, yes. And you can make games with it for the PC or 360, but you have to sign up to Microsoft’s 360 dev programme thing to be able to share them with anyone. I think it was $99 a year or something. Completely free would obviously be much better. They should do that.

Ah, right. I didn’t know that. And yeah, they should just make it completely free. Considering the type of talent they’re looking to foster, any charge will put people off.

You need to be part of the programme to download and try other people’s stuff too.

Considering the thrust of the keynote, I think it’s reasonable to assume they’re going to make changes to “accelerate” demand.
