Meier lists top three gaming innovations

Apparently these came from “a lunch designed to emulate the literary conversations once held at the Algonquin Hotel by Dorothy Parker”. That’s not funny, dude.
Meier’s top three gaming innovations are:
- IBM making the PC.
- The development of Sim City and other games that encouraged construction, rather than just destruction.
- Nintendo’s Official Seal of Quality, which raised the bar for console games from the 80s onwards.
Go Sid.

The Nintendo Seal of Quality had absolutely nothing to do with gaming content and everything to do with being recognised for paying Nintendo a licence fee and filling in their paperwork correctly so that you could be an “officially approved” Nintendo developer. The ‘quality’ meant nothing but succeeded in suggesting as assurance of quality that, in many cases, wasn’t present. It certainly didn’t raise the bar for anything other than bureaucracy and litigation (NES Game Genie fiasco anyone?).
I guess urban myth can fool even the smarter veterans now and again. What a shame.
