Want to know who scored best on GameRankings last year but can’t be bothered to spend hours adding everything up? You’re in luck. Sony America’s games scored highest in 2007, according to this, followed by Nintendo then Capcom. There’s graphs for 2006 and 2005 as well, should you be asking the obvious question of what happened in previous years.

Me too. Obviously, that graph doesn’t take into account the *amount* of games each publisher released last year.

As I was saying ‘elsewhere’, Sony have this reputation for making generic bilge. But if you look at their actual output, a lot of it is seriously top-notch stuff. The facts don’t support the assumption. It’s really weird - they’re almost the polar opposite of Nintendo, who have this ‘they never make a duffer’ reputation when they’re actually pretty bad with the old cash-in shovelware at times.

Nintendo gets by on a reputation for very high quality product because it has a few franchises that really stand out. They do have a knack of burying the crap, though. Mario Sunshine’s a perfect example. How the hell they got away with that I’ll never know.

I’m not really surprised. Sony’s biggest titles have all been review successes if not quite matching that in terms of sales. Ratchet and Clank got an astounding average given that it’s good but not amazing.
Meanwhile, some of Nintendo’s output (not to mention their current casual-wooing strategy) has rubbed plenty of critics up the wrong way. Wii Sports is arguably one of this generation’s defining games, but it didn’t score particularly highly with too many, while other games have seen criticism of the remote’s apparent imprecision.
Also: Excite Truck was reviewed unfairly by pretty much everyone except Eurogamer, who seemed to be the only place to realise how much fun it was.
Back to Sony, and I can’t say I played a bad game from them last year, unlike Nintendo (hello Mario Party 8), so they’re deserving winners in my eyes. Even if I do love Mario Galaxy more than is entirely healthy.
