Microsoft: Blu-ray won’t be a part of the “Xbox experience”
March 13th, 2008 @ 07:26
Jesus. Make your mind up. Microsoft said today that it wasn’t, in fact, in talks with Sony regarding incorporating Blu-ray drives into Xbox 360.
“Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience,” said Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, saying instead that Microsoft was focusing on digital downloads for the console. “”We’re the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content,” he added.
Microsoft is giving mixed signals on the Blu-ray issue, with boss Steve Ballmer saying implicitly that the company was talking to Sony about the drives and a Sony exec confirming the news.
Greenberg’s comments, however, appear to signal that Microsoft may support the technology buy has no plans to produce a 360 SKU with an in-built Blu-ray drive. From the sound of it, a Blu-ray add-ons off the table, too.

I just bought on of the Toshiba Ep 30 HD-DVD drives for £50 from Play with 2 free discs. It would simply be rude not to!

I’m waiting for the 360 HD-DVD drive to hit £20, and then I pounce. Late adopters ftw.
Edit: Oh. You’d think I would know that code doesn’t work in comments. I’ll leave it there for posterity.

I’m going to get a PS3 instead, and pay millions of pounds for Blu-ray discs. I love consumerism.

HD-DVD’s are soon to be cheap as chips. Could build up quite a solid collection of HD movies very cheaply!

There is that.

Microsoft talking to Sony about drives doesn’t necessarily mean they’re putting them in the 360. They could be talking about PCs.
