I'd always thought that story about the motion sickness seemed a bit too weird to be true. I wonder who came up with that excuse?!

There must be Japanese forums where small groups of people are raving about the likes of Halo 3 like some here go on about Ouendan or Rhythm Tengoku - I find the thought of that strangely heartening. :)

The 'Japanese people throw up when they play FPS games' thing is pure urban myth. The reason FPSs aren't bigger in Japan is because PC gaming isn't very big in Japan - pure and simple. Vomit has nothing to do with it.

There's a small subset of Japanese gamers who love Western games, just like there's a small subset of Western gamers who love Japanese games. These are the guys who are buying the 360 and the games to go with it, and you're right - they pretty do much buy all of them. So Microsoft gets a little bit of success in Japan but, alas, it's with "non-core" Japanese gamers. C'est la vie! :-)

Yep, basically. I think the Japanese are slowly starting to come round to Western genres (Bioshock top 10 recently, Oblivion also) and I bet the attach rate for those games given the size of the userbase is really high. I think the next generation could see Western titles making bigger waves - they obviously appeal to the critics, and certain discerning players are appreciating them too.

(Incidentally, there's an issue that a lot of Japanese gamers have with motion sickness from first-person shooters. I'm not sure why this is, but it's a problem that's far more common in the East, for some reason. Apparently that's part of the reason why the genre's never been big over there.)

Big LOLs at #16.

I think the 360 has a bit of a cult following in Japan - it's one for the REAL hardcore gamer.
