“Portable Copy” PS3 firmware functionality appears from nowhere
March 24th, 2008 @ 09:51
PCWorld - that most reliable source of PlayStation 3 firmware-related news - is claiming that version 2.20 of the console’s software “exposes ‘Portable Copy,’ which enables PS3 users to copy a standard-definition version of the Blu-ray movie to a PlayStation Portable (PSP).”
There’s no mention of the feature in SCEE’s press release about the firmware update, so it goes under “rumour”. Bear in mind that in-game messaging wasn’t included in the release and isn’t in the update, so don’t hold your breath on this.

Didn’t Sony mention something like this ages ago?

It does ring a bell, yep. I’m pretty sure this is bollocks, though. It’s not mentioned in the press release at all.

It is something that the PS3-PSP will do eventually. I wonder how long it takes the PS3 to convert 90 mins of film.

Sony announced this feature a while back, so who knows

Apparently it’s not true. Link

Decoding and re-encoding an HD movie into a portable AVC file would take hours - yes, even on the awesomely powerful, sentient supercomputer that is the PS3.
Far more likely is that a gig or two of the 50GB BD houses a ready-encoded portable version that’ll simply be copied off onto memory stick, a process that shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes.
