PS3 GTA IV more expensive at WHSmiths, Game and GameStation expect similar

Major UK high street retailer WHSmiths has priced the PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV at £44.99, while the 360 version will cost £5 less at £39.99.

The pricing has been confirmed as part of the chain’s pre-order campaign: take a look at photos of promotional material after the link.

Speaking to videogaming247 today, both Game and GameStation store managers said they expected the PS3 version of the Rockstar title to cost more than the 360 SKU, but neither outlet has yet priced the game.

“The PS3 version will probably cost more. We’re expecting an RRP from Rockstar on April 14,” the GameStation staffer said. “They dictate the price, basically.”

The whole thing’s academic if you’ve got half a brain: Amazon.co.uk’s offering both versions for £34.99.

GTA IV releases on April 29.

  1. Wonder why, on Amazon.de the 360 version costs €2.50 more…

  2. Really not sure, if I’m being honest. I don’t really understand why the PS3 version could be justified as costing more.

  3. Maybe because of the BD, at least that’s how I would justify a higher price, though that’s probably not true.

I don’t think the BD printing costs would have much to do with it. Yes, it’s more expensive to manufacture than DVD but for a game like GTA:IV the economies of scale would likely render it inconsequential.

Perhaps it’s more to do with the 360 install base allowing for more software to be sold or part of the $50m wad of cash Microsoft gave to Rockstar at work.
