Overrated.

Nah, Grim was brilliantly written, but adventure games aren't really my bag.

Bioshock was one of the best games I've played bar none, ever.

So I think you're all horrible people for slagging it off. You'll start on Grim Fandango next, I wager!

Criticism is good, especially in this case. It's not as if it's going to harm sales, is it? It's important to say what's wrong with things. Anything.

There isn't enough discussion about stuff that's wrong with highly-rated games. Far too often people shout you down as a "whiner" for pointing out stuff that could've been better. If this'd have been a Nintendo thread we'd have probably been strung up by now! :-)

I was stuck on the bastard train mission for ages, but I did make it past it in the end. And all the missions directly after that were much easier. The clots.

You probably got to that train mission I mentioned earlier. :P Definitely one of the most annoying (compulsory) GTA missions ever.

I enjoyed the setting of VC a lot more, I found it to be a lot more atmospheric. Shame you didn't progress with SA, the latter areas are much better than the first city. So you never made it in to the country? That was a very memorable gaming moment for me. I can still remember getting out there for the first time.

That's my constant problem with GTA: it's just too much. They're too big. I can see how people get lost in them, but they do have flaws, like ridiculous difficulty spikes and anomalous missions which really disrupt the flow of the game. Looking at IV, though, the presentation's so good that I can't believe they haven't got it right this time. I can't think of a more "essential" game, to be honest. It's going to just blow everything else away this year in terms of sales.

I didn't like VC nearly as much as I thought I would. I loved the setting, the music, etc. and it was all "more" than GTA3, but for some reason it just didn't click the same. I got stuck on some mission or other fairly early on and never went back to it.

San Andreas I played a bit more, but I never actually made it out of the first area for the same reasons - failed a mission a few times, got fed up of retrying, gave up.

I loved GTA III. I didn't enjoy Vice City as much. It felt too "polished". I loved the grimy feel of III. Never played San Andreas.

They same thing happened in those games. You got a weapon for every 10 packages you got, it was exactly the same in VC, but I think they changed it so you unlocked armour by doing vigilante missions instead. SA was similar, but each area had different hidden items, and getting them only unlocked items for that city's hideout. It was a little bit too much for me to do.

I remember in GTA3 that was precisely what happened and it was great - the more hidden packages you got, the more kit you got for free at your hideout. Then they changed it in Vice City and San Andreas so that that didn't happen any more. And lo, I was mightily pissed.

I still reckon GTA3 was the best of the PS2-era GTAs. I much preferred being a nameless, personality-free hood than stepping into someone else's shoes. I appear to be in the minority, however.

Oh, I usually just went back to my hideout, which was always packed with armour and weapons, since I always hunted out all the hidden packages. :)

Yeah, that's it for me. The travelling wasn't a problem, having to kit yourself out again most certainly was.

Anyway, didn't we clear this up the other day? I think it was Harry that said that now you just phone your mates on your cell and they come round in a car packed full of guns and armour and hookers. Or something. Which is obviously nice.

I thought it was more a case of having to actually restart the game or else you ended up at a hospital with no weapons/armour etc?

It only really annoyed in a few missions, those that would take you far away from the start point and then have you fail. Like one in San Andreas where you had to chase a train on a bike, and if you failed you ended up at the other side of the map. They were few and far between, and the travelling rarely bothered me. It's just the lazy cnuts who complain about it. :)

I'm not sure I like the concept of "retry" in open-world games any more after playing Burnout Paradise. It ruins the feeling of completeness.

"Forgive my lack of knowledge, but does anyone know if the absurd checkpointing system of previous GTA’s will be improved in this game?"

I don't think so, but it was never that bad anyway. I never had a problem with it, you rarely had to travel for more than a minute to get back to mission start. GTA would lose something with a "retry mission" option.

Yeah, that too. But as with GTA it's not the fact that it has an audience that baffles me, or even that its audience is so large, but that it's so universally loved by game critics and er... non-casual gamers, for want of a better way of saying 'gamers with sophisticated tastes'. I really do feel like I must be missing something, hence my expectation that I'll cave in and buy it, hehe.
