GTA IV is a PS3 system seller, says Play.com
April 9th, 2008 @ 09:41

Play.com games boss Gian Luzio has told MCV that GTA IV is already the fatest selling game on PS3, and that the title is also proving to be a system seller.
“This is the biggest ever title for PS3 by a long way - and probably 360 as well,” he said. “I’ve been really blown away by how quickly it’s sold on PS3. Sales have gone crazy and have proven to be a real hardware driver already. We’ve sold out now, but will be getting in more stock as soon as it becomes available.
“We expect to have some stock back in for the day of release on April 29th.”
Many UK retailers are now struggling to meet demand for the game. It was reported yesterday that GAME has stopped guaranteeing release date delivery for the title.
Thanks, Blerk.

Microsoft pimps GTA IV hard.
Sony reaps the benefits.
Whoops.
April 9th, 2008 at 10:21 am
“and probably 360 as well”
April 9th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I think the real winners here are probably going to be Rockstar and Take Two.
April 9th, 2008 at 10:30 am
There are no winners in wars. Only losers and whores.

Mercenaries don’t die. They just go to hell and regroup. With some prostitutes.
April 9th, 2008 at 10:37 am
Isn’t that headline a bit of a leap from what was actually said? :p
April 9th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Well, he used the phrase “real hardware driver,” but it’s the same thing

Lol. It’s funny how surprised he seems.
Did people really think that a couple of episodic content packages would really tip the balance that drastically in the 360 versions favor? Especially considering the GTA series history.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
I think there’s likely to be a lot of people with PS2s that are considering the PS3 for GTA4. MS are idiots anyway… it seems like even a lot of 360 owners don’t realise GTA4 is coming to the 360.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Microsoft needs more people with GTA IV “tattoos” to educate the gaming public. Maybe one per game store.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
HAHA! That made me lolz.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Ahh Peter Moore, you’re missed. =)
April 9th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
not surprised at all, the masses heard a new GTA is coming out and no matter how much MS throw at advertising they still go out and buy a PS3 cause you need a PS3 to run it innit!
April 9th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I think you guys are overreacting a bit. 360 version will still be by far the biggest selling version.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
“By far” is pretty relative. It will ofcourse sell more by the fact that there are currently more 360’s out there than PS3’s.
But I think it will probably be a surprisingly close run all things considered.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I think the US and UK will sell more on the 360 but push more PS3s. I think the rest of Europe will sell more on the PS3 and push even more PS3s.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I think Psychotext is probably right.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I’ll be surprised if we ever see any real, unbiased, unspinned sales numbers though.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I reckon the 360 version will do double of the PS3 edition.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I pre-ordered both versions as I hadn’t decided which to buy.
I’m currently swaying towards the PS3 version for a couple of reasons:
1. I have yet to finish any of the GTA’s, so if I can’t even finish the game I doubt I’ll dabble in DLC
2. I think sony really have got into my head with the whole ‘GTA is synonymous with Playstation’ thing. If so, fair to play to them.
Can I live without rumble though? Yeah, I think I can
April 9th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
There are 18 million 360’s out there ( http://kotaku.com/359527/18-million-360s-sold-worldwide ), and around 12 million PS3’s. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3 ) (Last PS3 numbers are from January 1st).
I cannot in my wildest imaginations believe that the 360 version will sell DOUBLE the number of PS3 version.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Good point - does the dual shock 3 work with this?
April 9th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Patlike is on the case.
Every new high profile game released this year supports it though, so I would think yes.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Yeah, it’s got to, hasn’t it? They’ve had plenty of time to work with it.
I’d like the PS3 version for the controller, but it’s got to be the 360 version for me, since I definitely want to play it online.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
What do you mean by that? There will be the exact same online possibilities in both versions.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
But not the same friends.
April 9th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Aye. I’ll be joining in with the EG crew, and I reckon the majority of people there will be playing the 360 version. Also, my only other “real life” gamer friend only has a 360..
I’ve been immersing myself in info about this game recently. I can’t wait.
Why did I look..
April 9th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Thats true.
April 9th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
The EG sessions should be funtacular! =)
April 9th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Yeah, gotta be 360 for this game. For the friends list and the fact that Live runs smoothly for the most part.
April 9th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Knowing my luck, my 360 will RROD on the day I get it.
April 9th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
They don’t do that any more…

I saw a new one this morning somewhere… Kotaku or Joystiq, maybe? A ‘red dot of death’ or something. A single LED on the ring and loads of great graphic corruption on the screen. Handily not covered by the extended warranty. I never realised that only certain faults were covered by that - that’s a bit mean, tbh.
April 9th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
That’s not new. It’s just one of the more unusual failures.
April 9th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Well, it was new on me. Why aren’t all failures covered by the extended warranty, though?
April 9th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
90% of 360s that die fail with the 3 red lights error… which is why they do something. Other failures fall under the same warranty cover as the Wii and PS3 have.
April 9th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
I’m just waiting for that signature covered replacement Xbox (the one even Bill Gates signed) to melt down and get its own YouTube channel.
April 9th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Hey Psychotext: You might want to edit your post.
90% of the 360s that do die etc etc…
April 9th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
That’s a fair point. /o\
