“Sponsors win big” at MCV awards

April 11th, 2008 @ 10:58

According to GI, the sponsors of last night’s MCV Awards did rather well. Their words, not ours. From the site:

Nintendo picked up four gongs at the MCV Industry Excellence Awards last night, echoing its triumph at last year’s event.

Nintendo also acted as the Exclusive Retail Partner of the event, while fellow sponsors Gem and Codemasters also picked up awards.

Play.com, who partnered with MCV for its recent Live event at Wembley, picked up the award for best Online Retailer, while HMV won Entertainment Retailer.

Other winners at the event included GAME for Specialist Retailer, Grainger Games for Independent Retailer and Microsoft for the Halo 3 Game Campaign.

It reminds me of when EMAP gave out awards to its own mags at the Golden Joysticks one year. Voted for by the readers, but still…

Hi all. I’m putting myself at the risk of a mauling here – as is the saddening nature of these things - but I’d rather ensure that subsequent comments are at least based in fact.

Aside from the Grand Prix Award – this year won by a very deserving Nintendo – the MCV Awards are voted for by a large independent judging panel, with members from across all sectors of the industry. The Retail Advisory Board Special Recognition Award is the only other exception; voted for by a handful of UK retail’s leading games buyers.

These votes simply couldn’t be massaged, tweaked or fiddled without hordes of industry members knowing about it – and getting very, very upset with us!

It’s a painstakingly transparent process, which we feel really sets these Awards apart. Thankfully, the trade recognises this fact – it’s actually a major reason WHY companies want their name associated with the evening.

I hope at least some of you may recognise it too.

    Regards,

  6. Cheers for that, Tim.

  7. We’re just pissed we didn’t get invites. ;-)
