Euro 360 “sales have more than doubled” since price cut

April 17th, 2008 @ 10:03

Microsoft put out a press release this morning claiming that European Xbox 360 sales have “more than doubled” since the company cut the console’s price in Europe over Easter.

“Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe,” said Microsoft Europe entertainment devices boss, Chris Lewis. “The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that’s appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers.”

Microsoft, unfortunately, has failed to provide any actual before and after figures for the region at all. A shame.

Xbox 360 European Sales
European leadership position strengthened following recent price adjustment
LONDON - Thursday 17th April, 2008- The momentum behind Xbox 360 continues to grow, as Microsoft today announced that European sales have more than doubled in the wake of recent adjustments of the estimated retail price (ERP), solidifying its leadership position as the number one next-generation console in Europe and significantly broadening the console’s audience.

“Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe,” said Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe. “The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that’s appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers.”

Xbox 360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market.

On Friday, 14th March, Microsoft lowered the ERP for its Xbox 360™ family of consoles in Europe. Now with an entry-level ERP of £159.99, Xbox 360 is a video game and entertainment system that is appealing to an even broader audience. Upcoming releases of blockbuster games such as “Grand Theft Auto IV,” “Rock Band,” “Lego Indiana Jones” and “Ninja Gaiden 2,” will continue this momentum and give consumers even more reasons to buy Xbox 360.

  1. Fat lady isn’t singing yet!

Though lack of figures is a bit suspect.

  2. Gah! More smoke and mirrors!

NUMBERS! GIVE US THE BLOODY NUMBERS, YOU TWONKS! PERCENTAGES ARE MEANINGLESS!

  3. Lack of numbers = lack of confidence

  4. Can you really compare attach rates for the three consoles given that they all launched at different times? Wouldn’t those figures only make sense if you compared them at the same point in time - say, 12 months after launch?

  5. I do of course agree, and there are a myriad more cheaper games out for 360 than either of the other two consoles.

Jimmy White would be proud of the amount of spin on this press release.

  6. Ok its VGChartz ever so slightly dodgey numbers but still (Region “Other”)…

    w/e - 360 - PS3
    08/03 - 49000 - 84000
    15/03 - 60000 - 85000
    22/03 - 93000 - 111000
    29/03 - 91000 - 152000
    05/04 - 75000 - 117000
    12/04 - 67000 - 98000

So yes a bit of a boost in sales. Seems they are spinning the effect of the price drop with an expect increase in sale associated with Easter from the comparable PS3 figures though.

VGChartz numbers are more than ever so slightly dodgy…

  8. Considering there are more than enough games available on all formats, plus a gluttony of Wii titles being released almost every other week, I’d say attach rates are now independent of console release dates.

  9. It’s not so much “number of games available” as “length of time you’ve actually had the console”. There might be a gazillion titles available on day one, but you’re only going to want one or two. The longer you’ve had the machine, the more games you’ll have bought (probably). Seeing as 360s have been around the longest, of course they’re going to have the best attach rate.

  10. Add to those arguments the fact that the Wii is selling at at least twice the pace as the 360.

  11. make games cheaper too!

  12. Seeing as they are already losing money on hardware why not start losing on software too.

  13. The sales during this year will probably decide whether there will be another XBOX or not.
