You should begrudge the price of the 120Gb HD though surely? Yeah its a lot more convenient and I'm tempted myself but the cost really gets to me when drives are so cheap these days. To install GT5 Prologue, I had to delete the DMC4 install. So if I want to play DMC4 on my PS3, I'll need to 'enjoy' that 25 minute install again. Or alternatively just instantly load it on my 360. Now it's true to say that as I basically get every PS3 game, this isn't going to be a problem for everyone. Most likely it'll take a lot of people a long time to reach 'critical mass' as I have (or maybe not if you've installed Linux). And maybe in that time, you'd have sold or traded a bunch of games so could remove the installs any way. But the point is that I'm never going to have this problem on 360, and for me, the pick up and play element of console gaming is one of its key attractions. Of course, none of this would be a problem at all if the installations went from 'mandatory' to 'optional' as they are in VF5 and RR7 - then everyone would be happy. As it is, 'mandatory' just seems to be more like 'lazy' on behalf of the developers. In stark contrast, take a look at the lovingly crafted Burnout Paradise - a whole 30MB of data stored on the hard disk and that manages to stream in an entire open world from the BD drive with no problems whatsoever. That's the way to do it. Sorry but mandatory installs are the bane of my PS3-playing world, mostly because I’m having to shuffle about my content all the time because the hard disk is full.

To install GT5 Prologue, I had to delete the DMC4 install. So if I want to play DMC4 on my PS3, I’ll need to ‘enjoy’ that 25 minute install again. Or alternatively just instantly load it on my 360.

Now it’s true to say that as I basically get every PS3 game, this isn’t going to be a problem for everyone. Most likely it’ll take a lot of people a long time to reach ‘critical mass’ as I have (or maybe not if you’ve installed Linux). And maybe in that time, you’d have sold or traded a bunch of games so could remove the installs any way.

But the point is that I’m never going to have this problem on 360, and for me, the pick up and play element of console gaming is one of its key attractions.

Of course, none of this would be a problem at all if the installations went from ‘mandatory’ to ‘optional’ as they are in VF5 and RR7 - then everyone would be happy.

As it is, ‘mandatory’ just seems to be more like ‘lazy’ on behalf of the developers. In stark contrast, take a look at the lovingly crafted Burnout Paradise - a whole 30MB of data stored on the hard disk and that manages to stream in an entire open world from the BD drive with no problems whatsoever. That’s the way to do it.
