Microsoft: Sony’s late to the core gamer party

April 18th, 2008 @ 11:28

In an interview with Next-Gen, Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg reckons Sony’s a little late to the core demographic party and is essentially now trying to steal 360 gamers.

“I think the type of audience that [Sony is] going after with many of those games, frankly, are Xbox 360 owners,” he said, talking of the likes of MGS4, LittleBigPlanet and GT5.

“They’re trying to go after a consumer that has already bought an Xbox 360, which frankly has a much broader lineup with more titles and more exclusives. You could say that [Sony] showed up with too little, too late.”

After NPD data last night showed Microsoft narrowly outsold PS3 in the US last month, Greenberg was in a confident mood.

“I think the battle for the core user is sort of over, if you will. We’re heading now well beyond 20 million in console sales,” he said.

“I feel we’ve secured that core buyer, and that gives us quite a bit of an advantage versus PS3, which is late to the game and still at a price disadvantage relative to the Xbox.”

  1. Pah, I posted this hours ago, slowcoach! :-D

Anyway, it’s no good securing just the core buyer. The core buyer will probably buy a PS3 and a Wii as well. You need to broaden your horizons, Microsoft.

And all that talk of the 360 having a “broader lineup” is just silliness. We’re not buying that for a second.

    What he said.
Microsoft are stuck in a rut, even if it’s a relatively attractive one, the wheels are clearly spinning to try to move into broader horizons, but there’s no traction. They may think they’re broadening appeal, but every time they have a real opportunity to do so, it’s squandered by deficient handling on the PR side, as they show they aren’t able to target the right people with the correct advertising for the right game, and the product slinks off to an early death.

I just don’t think they have a grasp of that market, despite what their execs might have people think.

  3. The core gamer will own all 3, and unlucky for MS, that seems to be where their support ends.

  4. Oops. Wrong story
