Is this a fancy way of saying used?

It does say they’re new. Just a bit of a bashed box.

But they’ve opened them to test the console… it’s all a bit suspicious!

The official word is thus:
Ladies and Gents,
To hopefully alleviate some concerns raised regarding the sale of the box damaged consoles.
ChoicesUK Direct consists of a number of subsidiary businesses in addition to sales to the general public through the online website. ChoicesUK offers retail solutions to convenience store chains/owners and a wholesale games fulfilment arm to the trade.
We can confirm that you will receive a warranty card with your PS3 console should you wish to register your warranty with Sony Entertainment UK. The consoles for sale have suffered aesthetic box damage from their travels to and from trade customers across the UK. In light of this, they have been tested to ensure they are in full working order prior to being put up for sale on our website at a mark down price. As some of you may already be aware, we have sold similar box damaged products in the past (as recently as this week) and to date, we are not aware of any reported issues with these products and there will be further desirable boxed damaged products appearing on the site in due course.
If you do encounter a problem with a purchase from ChoicesUK.com, please contact our customer service team who will be able to advise you further.
