Wii is a “virus”, says Epic boss

April 20th, 2008 @ 18:07

Speaking in an IGN interview, Epic head Mike Capps has been less than complimentary about Wii’s general success, dubbing the system’s proliferation a “virus”.

It’s a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they’re like, ‘Oh my God that’s so cool, I’m gonna go buy it,’” he said. “So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they’ve showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there’s a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I’m still waiting for that one game that makes me play it.”

Capps was speaking at the Midway Gamer’s Day last week. Thanks Megatonik.

    It’s true. ><

  5. Yep. I’ve bought one, everyone who plays it wants one, I don’t play it at all or buy any games for it.

Let’s do the Time Warp again.

  7. For hardcore gamers? I could agree but your still pushing it with games like Galaxy, Zelda, Metroid, Smash brothers etc

He just sounds bitter & jealous to me, why? God knows.

  8. I still think the Wii is a bit of a fad. I do love the machine, but I don’t think the idea has lasting potential, and I think people will move on from it in a couple of years.

I wouldn’t say he’s bitter he makes a good point everyone I know who has bought a Wii no longer plays it. Just sits there gathering dust until maybe a title comes a long to give it a little week or so’s lease of life.

I don’t consider Nintendo’s machine any more a games console more a fun toy that you like to play once in a blue moon.

  10. Wow, with this kind of raw insight, the industry’s in safe hands, isn’t it? I’m also not sure the guy from IGN should be agreeing - hardly balanced, professional journalism, is it?

While he has a right to express his opinion, it’s done in such a way that makes him look a bit silly, really. Okay, Epic - you’re not doing anything for the Wii, we get it. You get on with that new modified Unreal Engine so we can get realistically fleshy monsters in Gears 2, and those who DO enjoy the Wii can play the host of great games which ARE available for it.

  11. I know plenty of people who get use out of their wii and the majority who have bought one and who still use it don’t post on sites like this or look at IGN etc.

They don’t care that the massive disappointment that was UT08 won’t appear on the wii and in all fairness, Epic are good at making engines but when it comes to AAA games they don’t bring much to the table. Some would say Gears, I would say one of the most over rated games i’ve ever played.

Is the Wii even marketed to gamers? I sold mine a while back

  13. So I guess they couldn’t get Unreal3 Engine working on it after all :)

  14. They can barely get it working on the PS3! ;-)

  15. Huh, strange. Got my Wii on launch day and I’m still playing it. There’s plenty of good games out there, I don’t get why people don’t… y’know… buy them.

Imo there is a shed load of quality already out for it (oh and 15 shed loads of old tat). ;)

funnily enough it’s the ps3 and 360 that I haven’t turned on in months… except to look at GT5p: the graphics whore in me made me do it, then died a little.

  17. A friend of mine played it at my place and went totally bonkers about it. He was very close to buying one himself. Then came christmas. He borrowed the console from me to play it with his family. When he brought it back he said they had had a blast. He came along again a few weeks later, again lending the machine. This time to play it with his girlfriend over the weekend.

They enjoyed it. But its been some time since then. He has not asked about the wii again AND he has a PS3 now.

Long story short: 102 percent agree.

    Alex
