Pachter: Microsoft is “foolish” to aim for number one

April 21st, 2008 @ 21:51

Speaking in the latest OXM podcast, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter has said that he believes Microsoft is “foolish” to be worried about leading the console war.

“I personally think that, with a lot of respect for the Microsoft guys…I don’t mean to diss them at all…I think they’re foolish to even worry about who’s first and who’s second. I think that’s just stupid,” he said.

“You can be second or third and still make a buttload of money. I don’t ever hear Activision or Ubisoft saying that they just hate being second or third and that they envy EA so much that they can’t stand it. They both make a lot of money, and are very happy to thrive.”

He added: “I don’t understand why Microsoft has to be first. It is part of their DNA, but they really don’t need to be first if they’re profitable. To finish first and lose a few hundred million dollars a year is a bad idea. To finish third and make a few hundred million dollars a year is a good idea.”

Thanks, Next-Gen.

  1. Because Microsoft are fucking idiots, that’s why. That’s why the 360 is such a shoddy piece of shite.

  2. /handbags

  3. I’ve just realised I hate all console manufacturers.

I might spunk a load of cash on a new PC and become a PC fanboy.

  4. …and play no games!!!

    hahahahahaha

Pachter is a bit of a PS3 fanboy (check his long term predictions from a while back) but I agree… you don’t need to come first to make some cash.

  6. His predictions don’t make him a fanboy. If he predicts the PS3 to do well, perhaps it’s because -and I’m just putting this wild theory out there- that he thinks the PS3 will do well. OMG fanboy.

Zumi: Yes, for sure… but I suppose you need to have watched his interviews and read a lot of his analysis to see it. Besides that of course, he admits it anyway.

The way I see it we have 3 viable consoles on the market, who said that one has to win? I think Patcher is spot on (Apocalypse is coming)

You don’t need to come first to make money, but you’ll make MUCH MORE money if you do. PS2 and PSP sales basically kept the PlayStation business solvent while the PS3 launched.

Coming first basically gives your console a ten year lifespan, versus half that or less for the runners up.

  10. But he predicts the PS3 will do well because -and now I’m putting some ideas out there- ZOMG the PlayStation brand conquers all innit.

The fact that it is selling worse than the GameCube doesn’t bither him much. The fact that a lot of Sony geeks still haven’t bought one due to a fucked up business plan (”Let’s make something really expensive that is hard to develop for”) doesn’t count.

No no no. It’s just Pachter and his Crayolas in his ivory tower. And now this crap. Is someone paying him for saying “It’s better to make money than to lose them”

Well paint me blue and call me Daisy but that is the words of Captain Obvious not Mr Insightful.

  11. “The fact that a lot of Sony geeks still haven’t bought one due to a fucked up business plan”

    :-)

Here’s an interesting graph. Would you have expected the PS3 to be there on the chart? I certainly wouldn’t have.

  13. What has the world come to when even you have to resort to VGChartz in desperation?

How is that PS3 of yours BTW?

  14. Non-existent.

I figure it’s okay to use VGChartz figures providing you’re comparing them with other VGChartz figures. Two wrongs make a right. Or something.

  15. You and Pachter both I would believe. I prefer your hand drawn charts to be honest. At least they have some flair.

  16. I haven’t done one of those in ages! Must get back on the graph train.

/goes off to make up some figures

  17. Well, I was surprised to see the PS3 so high on that chart. I was thinking about the latest Japan-o-chart wher the PS3 was dragging behind the Cube.

Guess Sony ought to show us Europeans some respect

  18. The PS3 in Japan is a failure when you compare it to the PS2 or the Wii. In real terms it’s tracking pretty much at the same speed as any other new (Japanese) console - like the PSOne or the Gamecube. Elsewhere in the world it’s actually doing a pretty good job of keeping up with PS2 sales at the same point in its life.

But it’s odd for Pachter to say that MS shouldn’t care about being first. Ubisoft and Activision might not *say* they’re pissed about EA being top, but you can bet your arse they’re trying their fucking hardest to top them and would be crowing from the rooftops if they managed it.

Blerk: In the US the PS3 is a long way behind where the PS2 was at the same time in its life. In the UK it beat the PS2 to a million faster… but that’s a dodgy comparison to make because the PS3 had a fully stocked launch and a fully stocked xmas in its figures, the PS2 didn’t (they launched at different times of the year).
