March NPD in-depth with coloured graphs

April 22nd, 2008 @ 09:24

Here it is: Next-Gen’s published its monthly NPD analysis feature, which is pretty much starting to be an essential read. Good graphs this month, with solid use of line and bar charts, including a nice “fantasy” extrapolation for hardware sales.

The rainbow culminative revenue graph on page eight is right up there with the best: a visual masterpiece.

There are some words, too.

“What is perhaps more astonishing is that the first three months of 2007 included an extra week – a so-called ‘leap week’ – that NPD uses to keep its retail calendar aligned with the real calendar. Put another way, more revenue has been generated in the first 13 weeks of 2008 than was generated in the first 18 weeks of 2007,” said author Matt “Axis” Matthews.

Take a look.

  1. Mmm! Stat porn!

  2. These features are really great. It’s a bit baffling that they seem to be the only people on the entire internet that properly analyze NPD data. Good for them, I guess.

  3. N’gai Croal’s blog usually does a nice round-up discussion of all the stats every month, but it’s usually weeks after the actual numbers are released, when everyone’s forgotten about them. :-D

  4. I miss that. I’ve got his RSS, so I shouldn’t.

    *investigates*

  5. Then there is the Duboius Quality blog

    Another stat fan

  6. Hmmm I dunno. These graphs seem to be lacking a certain je ne sais quoi that could really set them ahead of the crowd. Maybe I should give them a call.

  7. They should go 3D I reckon. And there aren’t any pies.

  8. Yep, a little perspective wouldn’t do any harm. And some anti-aliasing for goodness sake darling - this is 2008.

  9. 3D pies are worthless though. Fucking with perspective on informative graphics is a no go

  10. They need to be more information-heavy, then. I’d like to see more share-style visual analysis. I want to be completely baffled. You know you’re getting your money’s worth, then.

  11. I don’t know what you mean Tonka. We need some God Rays peeking through those bars.
