US gets 40% of all monthly Wii stock, says Reggie

Speaking to Wired, Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed that America gets around 40 percent of all manufactured Wii stock per month, which amounts to around 1.8 million units.
From the site:
“We are passionately upset about the lack of product relative to demand,” said Fils-Aime, who hit the points that Nintendo has been reiterating all along about its runaway hit game machine: The production numbers are determined by Nintendo’s Japanese parent, and Nintendo of America does its best to remind Japan of the “missed opportunities” when it doesn’t have enough product to go around.
Fils-Aime noted that North America gets about 40 percent of the 1.8 million Wii consoles Nintendo manufactures every month. The Americas are the only territory in which supply and demand are out of whack for Wii: Fils-Aime said you can walk into stores in Japan and Europe and find Wii on shelves.

America may not be the world, but that doesn’t justify the imbalanced distribution.
The percentage of Wiis that come to the U.S. should be roughly equivalent to the demand. I’d be willing to bet that more than 40% of potential Wii owners reside in the U.S.
Nintendo is already fighting an uphill battle. Making mistakes like this doesn’t help.

Ventillator: Agree with all of that… but, I don’t think that Nintendo wants to risk being short of stock in Europe for the launch of Wii Fit as it could be the killer app for their sales here (which have been good, but nothing like the US).
