Almost every GTA IV review out there has said pretty much the same thing - that the two versions are almost exactly the same - but for those of you who want video proof, IGN has done a head-to-head movie detailing every infinitesimal, arbitrary difference.
I gave up and watched it all because my build was taking ages.
Result:
omg, a PS3 version that doesn’t suck!
Sounds like the PS3 version has a very, very slight edge, but barely worth talking about. Their recommendation - “buy the version that your friends are buying so that you can play multiplayer with them”.
Just watched it all… not really compulsive viewing, but I was bored so…
Anyway, PS3 seems to benefit from having the game install to the HDD (saving 3-4 seconds of loading time! Wow!) and there are some very minor graphical wins (AA is better apparently), plus Sixaxis controls, but that’s about it.
Nice to see Rockstar made sure they got it as “right” as they possibly could for both machines, although for some reason I don’t think that fact will stop the endless fanboy wars over which is better any time soon.
Yet again I find myself wishing Sony would get on and give me the perfect excuse to buy a PS3. Come on where’s that MGS4 bundle… (and so on)!
Next gen NEVER means “something you haven’t seen or played before” and I think that’s why some people are disappointed. If you went through the jump from 2D to 3D, then most people expect every generation to take a leap like that, and it’s just not the case. You don’t need new hardware to produce a game that’s original and never been seen before. People expect far too much.
My definition of next-gen is “a game that does something cool that couldn’t have been been done last generation”. This doesn’t include ‘teh shiny hi-def visuals’.
Most 360/PS3 games couldn’t have been done on previous generations.
Or, they could have been done, but with corners cut. GTA IV’s euphoria stuff couldn’t have run on PS2 or Xbox, but if you think they could have cut it down and still made it work, then you could say the exact same thing about 99% of 360 games.

Aren’t you going to tell us what they are, then? I can’t be arsed watching a video. ^_^

Naahhh!

I watched the first 20 seconds. The guy says, “They’re the same, but there are tiny differences.”
Then I stopped it.

Damn it. I knew I should’ve gotten some friends.

I’ll be your friend, Blerk. However, for two people to be friends the feeling has to be mutual, I guess…

Oh wait, I don’t have a 360 or a PS3. So I don’t actually need any friends, it would appear.

The guy playing the 360 version is slightly crapper at it.

That “comparison” fails to recognise GTAs new home.
Instant fail.
Though the irony (Alanis irony, not the other kind) of watching comparison footage on youtube makes it well worth the time.

I’ve just watched the GameTrailers video review and… holy shit!

What?!
April 28th, 2008 at 10:43 am
It’s “the REAL next-gen”.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Of course it is: same game, a bit shinier, new features but nothing revolutionary, nothing we haven’t seen or played before = next-gen
April 28th, 2008 at 11:37 am
If you look at it this way, might as well say Mario Galaxy is next gen. Which i think truly is.

My definition of next gen is Kirbys Magic Paintbrush
