GTA IV will have “major cultural impact”, says neuroscientist

April 28th, 2008 @ 14:37

Speaking to the Times, neuroscientist - and Bee Gee - Barry Gibb has said he expects GTA IV to create real social change.

“The new Grand Theft Auto game will have a major cultural impact because it is one of the few titles which make people who have never played before spend £180 on a console,” he said.

Barry’s not expected to buy the game on PS3, clearly.

He added that the game was so successful in his opinion, because it created the illusion that you can create your own story in an entirely open-ended environment.

“That’s a different experience to films,” he said.

  1. Well of course it will. It’s not exactly brain surgery.

  2. Much as I’d love it to, I really can’t see GTA selling many consoles to non-gamers.

  3. I dunno. It looks so good, and the TV stuff’s been very prominent, that I reckon it’ll pick up people who’ve been standing on the fence about next-gen. Can’t see my mum buying it, however.

  4. Well, quite - last-gen die-hards like myself are already feeling the pinch, and I’m damn sure it’ll finally push most of them over the top. But he’s talking about “people who have never played before”, and I’m not sure those people are going to be particularly interested in GTA any more than they’re interested in all those other games.

  5. Fair enough. To be honest, I’m not sure how many “core” people are left that don’t own a games console any more, and you’re right: 40 year-old women aren’t going to be buying it.

  6. Hmm. More of a cultural influence than Wii Fit perhaps? Oh I can see Mr Vaz being impressed with that :)

  7. We were in Toys R Us at the weekend and a sales twunt approached the missus and tried to sell her Wii Fit and she’s like “what the fuck is this piece of shit?”. I was so proud!

  8. haha
