Portal was offered to XBLA and rejected, says Valve
April 28th, 2008 @ 12:00
Speaking to GI at the EA Games Studio Showcase in London last week, Valve’s Doug Lombardi revealed that Portal was offered to Microsoft for inclusion on XBLA, but was knocked back.
“We’d love to do that. Right now it’s something we’d love to do. I’d love to sell Portal on Xbox live,” said Lombardi. “[But] the platform holders aren’t doing that right now. There’s a size limit and all kinds of other things.
“We’ve asked them, we said we were open to it. So it’s a decision for the platform holder and how they want to make the games available and how much bandwidth they want to [allow].”

“We would’ve offered it to Playstation Network”, added Lombardi, “but we don’t give a shit about PS3 because we’re total fanboys.”

That’s a fantastic idea. All they’d have to do is make five new environments or something and I’d buy it again fo’ sho’

doug needs to learn to love the cell chip, sony would welcome a decent version of portal on PSN

“Comedy” aside, wtf are Microsoft thinking? Rejecting stuff like this and then green-lighting wonky Battlezone remakes and ‘arcade perfect’ Tron conversions? o_O

They need to stop this charade of being pro DD. Silly video rentals are OK. Genre defying games are not.
They can take Frogger and shove it up their money grabbing cocks.
It will be interesting to see how big the GTA add ons will be.
Fuckrosoft!

That’s actually pretty damn accurate. The platform holders aren’t doing that? What total and utter bollocks. Sony would snap their hands off for this. The guy is a grade-A pillock.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
The guy is a PC dev firts and foremost. The Sexbox is a PC in an ugly overcoat so it gets some VALVE love. The PS3 is the fevered daydreams of a deranged chip designer.
WTF would they waste time on Crazy Kens latest nightmare?
April 28th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I think it’s funny. PS3 owners should buy a 360, 360 owners should buy a PS3. Then all of a sudden, all dis shi’ don’ matta
April 28th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
They should do a 360 and a PS3 in a single box, like those dual DVD/VHS players.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Or, everyone should ditch their consoles and buy a PC.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Now you’re just being silly!

“WTF would they waste time on Crazy Kens latest nightmare?”
Christ, you’re a bit of an 360-fanboy aren’t you?
Well ‘Crazy Ken’s’ last nightmare sold over 115 million…the sort of numbers the 360 can only dream about…and I see the PS3 is slowly catching up.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
To the 360?
April 28th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Tonka an MS-fanboy?!
Comment of the day, that!
April 28th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Yes (to the 360). When first released people were crowing about how the PS3 would never catch up but it’s doing pretty well at the moment. Sony still have a lot of ground to cover though but it’s not the total failure that some people were expecting.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Tell that to the Japanese market.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Where the 360 is doing stellar numbers…
April 28th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Not exactly its home market though is it?
Anyway, bad decision by Valve all round, really. I think we all agree
April 28th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
CastellanSpandrell: Not really wishing to join in this trainwreck, but have you seen what the PS3 is selling in Japan lately?
April 28th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I know Tonka is only joshing, but his ‘faux fanboy’ act is getting pretty weary. It is deliberately baiting and lowers the tone of comments which, surely, is something this site should be discouraging.
It was amusing at first Tonka, but save it for Kotaku in future, huh?
April 28th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
It was the “GTA new home” thing that set him off.

“It was amusing at first Tonka, but save it for Kotaku in future, huh?”
Yeah right!
I got banned from Kotaku for ‘being an MS fanboy’
They bait people with 360 vs PS3 stories, then when you fall for it and join in, they ban you for having an opinion.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Well, its new home is, apparently, on VG247.
I just don’t see how pretending to be a fanboy / baiting fanboys to comment / being jokingly antagonistic can result in anything constructive. I know it’s fun to be in on the joke and all, but its run its course.
I own all three current consoles, both handhelds and a slightly underpowered PC. So I consider myself pretty neutral. And well paid.

G1GAHURTZ, you’re preaching to the converted here. I’ve no love for Kotaku’s farming and culling of gamer-trolls.

Look me in the eye and tell me I’m wrong.
*Valve are PC devs.
*Porting Portal to the 360 is a pish for them.
*Porting Portal to the PS3 would be a nightmare for them.
Where am I wrong?
April 28th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Because Portal is already up and running on the PS3 due to the Orange Box and sticking it on the PSN would be about as hard as copy+pasting.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Excuse me, but who said it’s definately not coming for PSN? Maybe ’twas just more news-worthy to post MS rejected the offer for a sure sell.
