GTA IV locks up on both formats, says internet
April 29th, 2008 @ 12:46

According to a slew of reports in the past couple of hours, gamers are complaining that a small percentage of both PS3 and 360 version of GTA IV have been locking up after the intro sequence. Rockstar is yet to respond and we haven’t seen any proof as yet, but expect more on this before the end of the day.
Update: Sounds as though it’s happening to both versions. We’ll have more on this later.

Does it always lock on specific systems or individual discs; or is it just random?

God knows. I could sift through the Kotaku thread, but I’m too tired. I’d expect it to really blow up when the Americans wake up later today.

Kotaku says it’s both versions doing it. So it seems it’s a software bug and probably a random occurrence.

Whoops.

A bit more reading suggests it’s a cache problem. PS3 users report that reinstalling their HDD clears the problem. Sounds like overkill, a reinstall of just the game files should be enough.

Not likely to be a cache problem on the 360, is it?
Sounds more like a random fail and they’re just not noticing it after a reinstall because the random element has moved on to making their fridge break down or something.

The 360 will still use a dynamic cache though. Which we hope can be cleared by holding A on boot.

No idea what the problem is, but I’ve not experienced it in 45 hours of playing the 360 version (25 on a debug, 20 on a retail).
Only “crash” I’ve had was when I got stuck against a counter in Cluckin’ Bell, unable to move or get served, and had to reload a save, and I couldn’t replicate it.

That’s quite realistic for a fast food joint though, innit?

Debug 360s don’t run retail discs.
Naughty Mugwum. Shame on you.

I’ve got nothing yet, either.

“debug”

Especially realistic for my local southern state-named chicken in batter then fried franchise outlet.

Bearing in mind he wrote the Eurogamer review I’m guessing he might have actually been playing using debug code on a debug console?

He might have done, that’s true. And with your added explanation of who Mugwum actually is, it makes a lot of sense.

I’m sorry, but no. Now leave and never come back.
