Man stabbed at GTA IV midnight opening in Croydon, UK (sort of)

April 29th, 2008 @ 13:58

A man was seriously stabbed at a midnight GameStation GTA IV opening in Croydon last night, according to this Local Guardian report, although on closer inspection it looks as though the guy was stabbed in the pub over the road.

“While waiting outside the store, a man stood next to us and was covered from shoulder to belly in blood,” said man-waiting-to-buy-game-with-nephew, Malcolm Critchell.

“Myself and others thought it was a show to promote the game but when we looked closer, he had been knifed repeatedly.”

Other eye witnesses have reported that a man appeared from the George pub and stabbed another man waiting in the queue.

Landlord of the Brief pub, Kenny Tibbett, 34, said: “I came out of the pub and saw a bloke staggering up the road with a gaping wound to his back and his head.

“There was blood all over the road and he was carrying a knife.”

Critchell added: “Later on, a police officer came to us and asked everyone if they saw what happened to the man with the knife. I purchased my game, left the store and asked a police officer about what had happened.

“It was actually real. We were told he had been rude to some bloke, to which he was knifed. He then went home, grabbed a kitchen knife and went looking for this person.”

Hardcore. Blame GTA, obviously.

  1. Is it just me or do those quotes make absolutely no sense whatsoever?

  2. Ah - selective quoting ftl, the proper story makes a lot more sense! And it sounds like the incident actually happened because of something that went on at the pub across the road, and wasn’t actually anything to do with the GTA launch at all. Great journalism from the “local” Guardian, there.

  3. I’ve done an edit on that. You’re right, he was stabbed in the pub.

  4. *seeing double*

  5. I don’t think he was stabbed in the pub, he was stabbed in the queue. But the incident which lead up to it happened in the pub.

Also - how old was this man’s ‘nephew’? 18? Hmm? ;-)

Edit: No, wait. I might be wrong. How many people got knifed? Did they knife each other? Part of it makes it sound like the incident happened in the pub, part of it like it happened in the queue. Must try harder, local media!

  6. *goes for lie down*

  7. Okay, I give up. The original story makes no sense either! :-D

  8. There’s no e in Croydon.

  9. You can still get speed and weed, though.

  10. Stabbed in the Pub? Sounds more like he was stabbed in the chest to me.

  11. News just in: Austrian man admits to playing a lot of “The Sims 2″.

  12. So wait, someone was stabbed for their copy of GTA? Therefore the stabber hadn’t actually played the game yet?

Wow, what’s the betting this story gets more coverage than the actual money the game makes in record time…

  13. He wasn’t even stabbed for the game, he was just stabbed ‘near some people who were waiting for the game’. The media must be very disappointed in the lack of midnight carnage. Bang go all those ‘GTA corrupting modern society’ stories they were planning for tonight.

  14. So it wasn’t in the pub then?

  15. MY BRAIN! AAARGH!

  16. More newsworthy - “UK Frag Doll Kitt plays GTA, proclaims it’s “buggy mess, rubbish, not a 10 out of 10 game”

    Newshounds….GO!

  17. Perhaps there’s not enough tearing in it for her? :-)

  18. Oh shit, look! You’ve got me doing it now!
