Hirai: “GTA has always been associated with the PlayStation platform first and foremost”

May 6th, 2008 @ 20:17

Speaking to videogaming247 at the SCEE PlayStation Day in London this afternoon, SCE president Kaz Hirai has said no uncertain terms that he believes Grand Theft Auto is primarily a PlayStation franchise.

“I think Grand Theft Auto, the franchise, has always been associated with the PlayStation platform first and foremost, and so I think consumers are coming back again,” he said.

“They had previous versions of Grand Theft Auto on previous platforms, so it’s always good to come home to PlayStation 3 as well, I think.”

Hirai refused to be drawn on whether or not Microsoft had wasted it’s money by paying a reported $50 million for exclusive DLC for GTA IV, saying that punters will vote with their feet.

“Well, it’s really up to the consumers to decide,” he said. “As I said before… it’s a franchise that’s associated with PlayStation for the longest time, and I think that based on the numbers I’m seeing right now, I think the consumers feel that way as well.”

We’re going to post the full interview with Kaz in a second.

Hes right in someways. To alot of people (not just hardcore gamers but people who have GTA on PS1/2), they have bought a PS3 just for IV as they associate GTA with PlayStation, doesnt mean it wont be just as good on 360 though, or PC. For me I love playing GTA on a PS even though I have a 360, its just something that feels right.

Although I think people forget Grand Theft Auto was a PC game, and looked much better on the PC then its PS1 counterpart. That pesky memory again!! (:

  3. He’s right, GTA -is- associated with PlayStation. Nice to see him not taking sly digs at the opposition though, he’s pretty much right and was quite humble about it.

  4. I agree with him although Microsoft has really tried to switch that message the other way round. Not only that DLC but also the small things like the infamous GTA IV tattoo ;)

yeah he’s right. GTA just feels right on the PS.
Ill be getting a PS3 sometime after street fighter iv being released but if i was some mahoosive GTA fan then i would be buying the PS3 to play it.
maybe its because the xbox is still quite new and i know where i am with the PS.
cant say the rrod entices me in either.

Yeah… that’s obviously why it’s selling more on the 360. Should probably tell the customers that it’s mostly a Playstation game.

    so much hates :(

  8. no game is associated with a brand its only fanboys that think like that. GTA 4 is just as much home to the 360 as it is on the PS3. Its a bloody game at the end of the day and a multiplatform one at that.

Sony and microsoft can argue over whos consoles better to play the game. Rockstar and take two on the other hand want it to sell good on both fronts.

im not a fanboy but come on man think for a second.
you think of mario and you think of nintendo. sonic, you think sega.
GTA isn’t as severe as those two games but people do tend to associate the game with the PS.
Personally im getting a PS3 because i prefer it, not because im a fanboy or i think i can only play a multi platform game on that system because if i try to play it on the other one then a big badger will pop his head round the door with a jolly “Ho ho you mong! hell do you think you’re doing?”

  10. Why didn’t you stump up the cash to exclusivise it then, Kaz? Eh? Eh?

  11. True, but this association will not last forever, and it’s certainly not strong enough to build a marketing strategy on. You’ll have to spend some extra money on that (the bundle was a good idea).

The 360 has achievements and DLC, the game is pretty much the same on both systems (though strangely looked better on 360 when we tried it using the same TV), and the 360 is cheaper. I really don’t see why someone would buy a PS3 just to play GTA4.

  13. Kaz Harai certainly knows how to talk a load of crap.
