Greenberg savages Sony over delays and promises
May 9th, 2008 @ 14:20
Microsoft product manager Aaron Greenberg has launched an unprecedented attack on Sony in an interview with Destructoid, assaulting virtually every aspect of the PS3 business and claiming the company has failed to deliver on numerous promises.
“We have been fighting Sony’s promises from the day we entered the market,” he said. “Three years ago at E3 they showed what PS3 games would supposedly look like with the Killzone 2 video, that we are now learning will ship four years later. That means that we will have shipped Gears of War and Gears of War 2 before they can even get Killzone out the door.
“Think back to GDC 2007 when Sony promised to leap ahead in online with the Sony Home unveil. Here we are two years later and multiple delays for a product that appears to have little to no buzz. Where are the Achievements? The friends list integration across all games? Where is the long-promised video store? Where are all the other products using and networking with their CELL chip? How come Blu-ray did not result in better games? What happened with Sixaxis and rumble? Where is the complete 1080p game library we were promised? If Blu-ray as they said would be such a catalyst to PS3 console sales, then why have PS3 sales over the past couple of months not seen any lift since the format victory?”
Much more through the link. Maybe someone got out of bed the wrong side, or something.

Noticed this towards the end…
“Today Xbox 360 has a 5-million-unit console sales lead on a global basis based on most recently public reported data from both companies. This includes more than double the installed base in the US according to actual NPD sell-through and over a 1-million-unit lead across Europe also based on reported sell-through from Chart Track and GfK.”
Looks like MS don’t agree that they’ve been outsold in Europe. Shipped vs sold perhaps?

How come they always ignore Nintendo when shouting about sales figures?
May 9th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Because Nintendo crushes all!
(they both like to think Nintendo is in a different market)

I agree with him. And I don’t think the PS3 is a bad machine, but I hope that Sony stop trying to hype their product up unless they can 100% deliver on it. They’ve made so many promises which simply seem like placeholders to compete with Microsoft. I don’t know how they got it so wrong. Maybe for the next console they’ll forget their media hub dreams, and concentrate on making a games console.

Sony have lost a lot due to over promising and under delivering while MS have pootled along constantly delivering (aside from good build quality ;). There’s not much he’s said there that you can disagree with.
RE: Ignoring Nintendo with sales figures - it is a different kettle of fish.

Checklist for the PS4 -
1. Cheaper. Price makes a difference, it’s absolutely vital.
2. Easy (and therefore cheaper) to develop for.
3. Unashamedly rip off Xbox Live. Hey, it’s not like Microsoft never ripped anything off, is it? Have no pride.
4. Support the online store. Games have been alright, but they’re sitting on a huge pile of PS1 games. If I were them, I’d been shovelling new games on every week. Make PS2 games available too, eh?
5. No bullshit. No CGI tech demos, no unfulfilled promised.

You can’t argue with that.

This. Greenberg’s rant comes across as a case of frustration to me a little. A bit like he’s saying “why do people persist on buying PS3s based on false promises?” almost.
It’s interesting to wonder whether things would be different had MS not had the hardware problems.

Why does he feel it’s necessary to come off like such a dick at this moment in time? Are they getting nervous?
Anyone read TINTIN “The Broken Ear”? There’s a scene close to the end that always pops into my mind when Sony and MS are laying into each other.

You can take away all of my internet privileges but you can’t really argue with a word of it.

Why doesn’t anyone ever bring up Nintendo when talking bout sales numbers?
Because from the beginning Nintendo’s deal was that they were not going to compete with Sony or Microsoft but that people would either buy a Wii and a PS3 or a Wii and a 360. If your not competing with the Wii why would you care what they do? That does, however, bring up the point; what then, did Microsoft make a clone of the Wiimote?

Tonka: Perhaps they thought it’s a good idea to copy Reeves from Sony. It certainly works for Europe. =)

Amen Brother Aaron! It’s all quite true. Sony has over promised and way under delivered…
It’s hilarious, KillZone 2 graphics are now barely a notch above COD4 instead of the amazing CGI they showed way back in the day! 1080P native, only on a handful of games and the mighty cell and 50GB of blue-ray have not lived up to much.
It’s amazing, three years ago I though PS3 would crush, out-class 360 but here we are and 360 is and will continue to be better than PS3.
From what has been shown, Gears 2 will look three times as good as Killzone 2! Further demonstrating that Xenos owns RSX!

Good grief.
Tonka, if that’s you, you’re not funny.

I don’t think most people who think the PS3 has under delivered even own one. I own one, and I don’t feel that it has under delivered. It gives me exactly what I was looking for, I know that there is more to come, and I’m not going crazy over the fact that it doesn’t completely obliterate the 360.
On the other side, there is no such thing as an honest PR person, they all bend the truth so that people will buy their product, that is their job.
It seems like people expect all the great games and features to be delivered NOW. Do these people not understand business at all? What would happen if everything got released now, and nothing more for the next 6 months?
My point is that some people have to understand that the average consumer doesn’t care about these things, just fanboys arguing on the internet. Most people buy it because they want to play the newest games in certain franchises, or they buy it as a blu-ray player, or both, or for some other feature.
Sony, nor any other company for that matter, can satisfy everyone, on every point, and the fact is, they don’t have to. The PS3 is doing quite well for itself regardless, and increasingly so.

i just have a wii right now but am more impressed with the PS3 than 360 and think it has a lot more potential. looking at the PS2 also suggests that the PS3 will get there and be pretty darn successful.
guess we’ll soon see eh.
by soon i actually mean not even remotely soon, more like 2 years or so but soon rhymes with moon so JAM ROAST!
May 10th, 2008 at 2:26 am
deanimate: I think you’re the perfect example of what Greenberg is ranting about.
May 10th, 2008 at 10:25 am
really? i didn’t think there were that many other people out there who liked jam roast?
hmm
May 10th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
deanimate: Jam roast is a massive issue for Microsoft’s sales strategy. I don’t know why people are underplaying it.

It’s been fairly civilised on the western front lately. Then out of the blue this assault. He makes some good points, They have been fighting a phantom (not THE phantom mind) but some of it feels a bit rantish.
It makes for good topics at least.
May 10th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
exactly tonka, its been a one man assault by jam roast and did anyone listen psychotext? did - they - …no, they didnt.
be it on their heads.
