MS Gamer’s Day: Banjo Kazooie 3 - first level in one of six gaming worlds described

Danish site Gamereactor has described in detail the first level of Rare’s new genre-blender, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

“When Fileccia [head programmer] jumps into to the first of six gaming worlds, namely Nutty Acres, we see the game open up,” said the site, lovingly translated by videogaming247.com.

“The palm island is designed after an idea to make the world look artificial. The grass is sewn together with a huge needle and a huge glass case surrounds the island.”

Whilst talking about how you design vehicles, the article explained:

“Fileccia wanted to show us how important [vehicle design] was for the game and its many missions. On the top of the island he had a mission whereby he had to collect 15 coconuts from a nearby orchard before the time ran out.

“He was given a pre-made car to help him, that has the ability to suck up the coconuts. However, as there isn’t enough space to suck them all up he has to go backwards and forwards to unload. Until in the end, he jumped out of the car and instead leapt into a helicopter [that he had made earlier] which can grab onto a large barrel with a hook enabling him to scoop all the coconuts in and began collecting nuts like it was Christmas.”

We’ll say it again: Now, please Rare. Thanks. The game will be shown to press in San Francisco at 5pm today. Check out more details here.

  1. enough of the banjo news? we get it?

  2. I reckon there might be “a bit more” later.

  3. Enough of the Banjo news? Why? It’s like, all newsworthiny an’ ting, innit. And like, we da newzsite, innit.

    Lickle more.

    MOAR!

  5. Reckon we’re going to get some video later, God willing.

  6. You have to collect stuff where you can then collect stuff to collect. Rare. Bless ‘em! :)

  7. I want to build a roflcopter.

  8. What hasn’t really been described anywhere is the physics. You can’t just whack loads of stuff together and expect it to work. If it’s too heavy, or the weight is disproportionate, then it’ll fly/drive like crap and eat petrol like anything.

Apparently there are so many different factors to consider that it’s untrue. And loads and loads of fun.

  9. Wait… petrol? What? Since when was petrol fun?

  10. Since I poured it all over RARE’s headquarters and put a match to it?

  11. Do damp squibs burn, then? :-D

  12. …”he had a mission whereby he had to collect 15 coconuts from a nearby orchard before the time ran out.”

    Teh greatness, can’t wait.

Hope they put pineapple missions in there too.

    I heard they’re tasty.

  13. 113.9p a litre is loads of fun.

  14. Is being a cynic somehow fashionable? I must have missed that one.

It’s not what you have to do, it’s how you do it. With all the different vehicles you can put together there is no set way of doing anything.

    Sounds brilliant.

  15. I reckon it sounds good, yep. Petrol or not :)

  16. It’s not fashionable, it’s just damned good fun. :-)

If you’re a terminal cynic you can never be disappointed, only surprisingly pleased. I recommend it to everyone!

  17. Oh I’m that, yeah, to a certain extent. But I fail to see how anything revealed about Banjo so far can be frowned upon. The gameplay seems very similar to LBP and that gets nothing but praise across the board.

Blerk: When you’re too cynical you’ll never be pleased as you’ll find a way to pick holes in the good stuff too.

  19. But the good stuff deserves to have holes picked in it. Nothing’s perfect and to pretend otherwise is to encourage similar mistakes in the future. You can nitpick at brilliant games and still enjoy them. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

I’m not being cynical. It’s just that I don’t want to play that kind of “quests” anymore. Not in any game. I like Rare, their sense of humour and even Banjo - but that’s just lazy. Always has been. I felt my anticipation for that game dip before I got to the end of that sentence.

And yes, I’m well aware, that it depends on “how you do it”. But that doesn’t change the fact, that you’ll be playing the same old fetch missions over and over again.

Other than that - and the fact that games don’t necessarily get better because of added vehicle-elements (Jak 2 or Kingdom Hearts anyone?) - I’m sure it’ll be a charming game.

It just doesn’t get me excited that way.

    Alex

  22. Blerk: That’s true, but nit picking about the fact that a vehicle you drive needs fuel is a little bit excessive, don’t you think?

Also, if all you do is nit-pick and poke then surely the bigger picture that you champion above becomes oblivious to you as all you’re doing is focusing on idiosyncrasies that don’t really matter.

  23. Random_H: It’s one level, mate. No-one said they all were fetch quests from start to finish.

  24. Well, it all depends on how that fuel is implemented. If you recharge it by picking stuff up in-race then that’s much better than having to stop to refuel, etc. But it’s kinda like time limits - and I really hate time limits. They suck. I’m biased against them. In this case we really can’t tell until we see how the game works, but little things like this always set alarm bells ringing for me.

As for focussing on the idiosyncrasies, that only becomes a problem if you can’t appreciate the things that are good as well. Too often people will shout you down for daring to suggest that something about their favouritest title of the minute could actually have been very much better. Denial is a far worse crime than nitpicking. :-)

  25. Again, you’re right but I don’t see any evidence of that going on here. Yeah I’m a little hyped about the game but if you criticised the art-style or something and I went all defensive then fair enough.

However, from what I’ve read, you only get to use a certain amount of fuel for each vehicle, i.e. no mention of refuelling.

Also, at any time through a level you can go back to the main area and choose another vehicle to use without it affecting the time limit. (I can’t quote the article but it’s inferred).

But you’re probably on the mark when you say that there will be fuel pick-ups along the way. Hopefully we’ll see in about three hours.

  26. I was talking ‘in general’ there, by the way. I wasn’t accusing you of anything. For once. ^_^

  27. *shock*

    :)

  28. It sounds absolutely nothing like LBP, in any way.

  29. Well the fact that you can create your path your a level on a vehicle with over 1600 different part to choose from an assemble each giving completely varied physics and options sounds to me a little like LBP.

    morriss: That’s reaching a little.

  31. Well that’s just a culmination of what I read in the Danish article and the Neo Gaf stuff.

  33. Yikes! I’m getting Rogue Galaxy workshop flashbacks!

  34. I wonder if you can fly to those islands and cogs in the background or if that’s all just ‘backdrop’?

  35. The delicious irony of shouting “Cynic” when something you clearly have a bias for is getting panned, yet didn’t think anything of giving GTA a good solid kicking :)
Horses for courses. And fwiw the vehicle editor for BK3 is nowhere near as sophisticated as the editor in LBP. I don’t see BK3 allowing you to make a tank with cotton reel wheels.
