NCsoft announces MMO “starter packs”

NCsoft has released £1.99 “starter packs” of its larger MMO titles, such as City of Heroes, City of Villains, Guild Wars and Lineage II, the company confirmed today.
The packs contain the game and two week’s free play, after which gamers can decide whether or not they want to go back to the retailer and buy the full product, or… not.
“The Starter Packs are an exciting retail initiative to drive physical sales of NCsoft titles at store level. At £1.99 they represent great value for money to players interested in online gaming and through their messaging will drive sales back to the retail outlet,” said NCsoft’s Duncan Hamilton.

Or you could just offer the game as a purchasable download and cut out the middle man. So pointless to have to go buy the game in a shop install it using the discs then never use those discs ever again. They then become dust magnets.

They already do offer the games as downloads, this is a way of getting a go at the games without spending much cash, a rather good idea.
