"analysts writing up stories either predicting a price cut soon or saying Sony’s estimates are unrealistic"

Analysts rarely do that simply because they don't have access to a company's plans to call them on it. It should sell more by default anyway simply because it's starting the year at a far lower price than the previous one and the game catalogue is bigger.

You're right, yep. I just hope this isn't indicative of them not planning to cut price any time soon.

Fair enough. :)

The price and specification debate is still important though - if Sony did nothing at all with the PS3 lineup, then yeah, I can see it selling at roughly the same rate as last year.

But I'd be amazed if they didn't do something to stimulate demand beyond the obvious peaks from the launches of GTAIV and MGS4 - either a price cut or a new "premium" SKU to satisfy all us whingers who want backwards compatibility and a Dualshock 3 out of the box before we buy.

If they combined the two, then I could definitely see demand taking off as they really start to tap into both the high and low-end of the consumer range, but as it is, £300 is still very expensive for your average, casual-gaming, SDTV-owning consumer.

Maybe Sony are being deliberately cautious so that they don't get analysts writing up stories either predicting a price cut soon or saying Sony's estimates are unrealistic. 10 million does seem quite a "safe" figure... and it always looks nice to have to revise your sales estimates upwards!

The more I see this the more I'm convinced it's because of channel stuffing. MS had exactly the same problem (they actually shipped less the next year even though they sold more).

It shows less than 10% growth YoY. Given how obvious it is that they're going to have a much stronger Christmas this year, I'm increasingly believing someone put the wrong figure into the financial statement. Maybe whoever did it was on badass Gears 2 drugs, or something.

10 million is pretty low - we were expecting a much higher figure. See the thread below for further scratching of heads. :-)

10 million?

I presume they're expecting to make a price cut and/or introduce some new SKUs before Christmas...?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I should just take this opportunity to point out that I'd buy one if only SCEE would release that American 80GB MGS4 bundle over here instead of persisting with the crappy "40GB and a Sixaxis and a game" thing they've been doing for ages...
