Yescombe reponds to IGN Haze review: “MEGAowch”

May 20th, 2008 @ 13:17

Free Radical scriptwriter Rob Yescombe has responded to IGN’s 4.5/10 drubbing of shooter Haze by saying he just wants people to make up their own minds.

“My thoughts are ‘Owch’. No, wait - MEGAowch,” he told PSU.

“Haze has had mixed reviews, but even GoldenEye got a 4/10 when it first came out. With a 9/10 in the Italian PSM, and an extremely positive review in Famitsu, we’re looking forward to people playing Haze and making a judgment for themselves.”

GoldenEye got a 2/5 (4/10) from Empire magazine. If you’ve seen that review you’d know that they had clearly not bothered playing the game.

Getting a 4.5 from IGN is another story completely.

  2. My god, they’re hanging onto those Italian PSM and Famitsu scores like grim death.

  3. A Famitsu FPS score is about as worthless as me rating a JRPG.

  4. Who is this Yescombe fella and why should I know?

I think he was the script/story writer for haze.

  6. Unfortunately for them, it’s not just one bad review, it’s scoring poorly across the board. This is another in a long line of high profile flops for the PS3, but I really didn’t think Haze would be that bad. I thought it would be at least a decent FPS, if nothing special, but it’s just sounding like an all-round poor game. It’s a bit of a shame really, too, since FRD are a good team, and nekotcha has been good to have on EG. They’ve obviously worked really hard at the game, so it’s disappointing to see it fail in such a way.

  7. maybe LittleBig Planet will be the AAA the PS3 needs?

I would say MGS 4, but after reading that interview with Kojima in Edge, it seems as though he is a PS3 hater(although we all know it was lost in translation).

It is a disappointing release… they had so much time to learn and leapfrog the major players, but they chose not to rock the boat.

  9. I have to say, it seems very unwise of FRD to use Rob Yescombe as frontman for their PR on this game. He just comes across as an overbearing prat in too many of the Haze promo things I’ve seen.

Yeah, all those advanced previews of MGS4 have really slated it….

Prediction: 360 version out in three months with tons of fixes…

  13. A gaggle of bad reviews will be enough to can the 360 and PC versions completely, I would’ve thought. They already sunk more than enough money into the project.

  14. Yeah, I’d be surprised if it made it elsewhere, if I’m being honest. I don’t know why anyone would buy it on 360 in large numbers after this.
