Pachter: Console price cuts this year, growth to slow after 2008
May 21st, 2008 @ 06:56
Speaking at the Electronic Gaming Summit in the US yesterday, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicted that both Xbox 360 and PS3 will come down in price this Christmas to the tune of $50 a piece.
This Kotaku report also states that Pachter expects the industry to see between 19-20 percent growth in the US and European markets this year.
Pachter said that unless a new console is introduced in 2011, the industry will “flatline”, with growth slowing up to that point.

2011??
Wow, do we really have to wait that long until the next console wars start?
Ooooh the anticipation!

$50 seems quite a conservative estimate. Microsoft could probably get away with that, but Sony really need to bring theirs down a bit more.

And a lot quicker than Christmas, too.

Blerk: Yeah, the 360 should drop by more than that this year… just based on what they were able to do with the European price.

Next week would be nice. Then they can cut it again before Christmas without looking silly.

As long as PS3 comes down significantly in price, I’ll be happy.

I’m in a complete ‘which console should I buy?’ daze. Every time I think I’ve reached a decision, something happens that makes me think twice. I might just sit this generation out.

Get a 360 and PS3.
360 is an unmatched gaming machine and the PS3 will have some excellent exclusives and good media functionality too.

I don’t want both. I only want one.

I expect MS to cut the 360 price again way before Sony do. Just to pinch more of the waverers and to bring across some of the people recently introduced to gaming by the Wii. Sony probably will hold off till November for a huge discount but we’ll probably see some minor discounting in the form of new bundles like a MGS4 pack with DS3s.

Blerk: Then whichever decision you will make will be the wrong one. o/

Quite.

PS3lol, innit. You won’t be getting Disgaea on 360 any time soon.

Stop procrastinating and just buy the one with your favourite game!

Yeah, but what are the chances of Sony doing anything before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4? Pretty low I think. Once MGS4 has helped them shift a few more boxes, I reckon they’ll take some more interesting actions to buoy demand.
I for one would love to have a PS3 by Christmas, but Sony are still not making it a clear decision for me. If it weren’t for a couple of core Sony franchises holding me to their brand, a 360 Elite would look a lot more attractive right now.

Sony aren’t likely to do anything until LBP now. Besides the fact that they’ve made it clear they’re more interested in profitability than market share (mostly because the PS3 wiped out all their profits from the PS2 era).

It’s just not as clear-cut for me this generation, so far at least. Last time was a no-brainer. This time around the stuff I’m interested in seems to be spread all over the shop.
