MGS4 has 90-minute cut-scenes, says mag

Oh dear. According to this CVG piece, Metal Gear Solid 4’s cut-scenes run up to 90 minutes a pop.

The info’s taken from the latest edition of UK mag PSW, who’s quoted as saying, “MGS4’s story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc.

“As you’d expect, you’ll spend a lot of time watching cut-scenes, so if you found previous games’ story exposition laborious, then you’d better find yourself a nice cushion and plenty of teabags in readiness for MGS4’s.

“They can be skipped, but you’ll be missing out on some of the finally crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming.”

For the record, the only things we do for 90 minutes are write and sleep. Just saying.

  1. 90 minutes is just completely ridiculous, I’m not sure I can really believe that. I hope you can save in the middle of them if it’s true.

That should read ‘most finely crafted’, not ‘finally’. Bloody CVG.

    absolute overkill if true…

So you get an hour or so to play and watch most of a cut scene :/

  4. I read on CVG that you’ll have the opportunity to skip or pause cut scenes. I pray to the gods of videogaming for a save option. Otherwise MGS4 could well turn out to be unplayable for me… :(

    :O

That’s just… woah. I really enjoyed the last games but hated the story. I was going to give it a chance in MGS4 but there’s no way I’m watching cut scenes that long.

  6. Bring it on. I’m too much of an MGS fanboy to care. In fact, that sounds great to me. I adore the quality and over-the-top nature of the MGS stories.

Anyone saying the MGS drops gameplay in favour for cutscenes and exposition never really discovered just how many things are crammed into MGS and all the treats you can discover. Their loss, I guess :P

  7. OMG! We had an internet ‘outage’. IT WAS HELL!

Anyway, I can appreciate that MGS has a story to tell, but sitting there for 90 minutes to watch a cut-scene is just too long. That’s movie-length. Could they really not have broken that up into smaller segments?

Saying you can skip them isn’t really an excuse - what if you’re interested in the story but don’t actually want to sit and watch a full feature film in the middle of your gaming session?

I know you can re-watch the cutscenes later… I just really hope that at this sort of length they’ve included bookmarking or FF / RW.

  9. I’m going to play MGS2 soon. For sure.

I know it’s going to sound like an echo in here, but… 90 minutes!!!??? Sometimes I don’t even get that long in one go to play a game, so I’ll be buggered if I’m going to spend that amount of time watching one cut-scene.

As others have said, I hope it’s possible to save in the middle.

Although actually, I for one have always enjoyed MGS’s cutscenes - the story and the characters are a big part of why I’ve continued to play the games in this series. But at the end of the day, it’s meant to be a game first and foremost and that’s where I think MGS3 got the balance about right, yet this - if 90 minutes is true - might be a little bit wide of the mark.

  11. I find this really hard to believe. Are they sure they don’t mean that the cut scenes run up to 90 mintues in total?

  12. Didn’t the BBFC already confirm there’s about 9 hours of cut-scenes in the whole thing?

mart: The ending alone is apparently an hour long… I wouldn’t imagine half an hour was enough for the rest of the game. ;)

  14. Hehe, ok then. Well, I’m not that fussed; I’m a sucker for MGS whether I’m watching it or playing it. I’m sure it’ll be a great laugh :)

  15. You are right, Blerk : about 9 or 10 hours of cut-scenes in total for about 20 hours of gameplay.

If I remind well, in MGS2 (or 3? not sure) there were already some cut-scenes with a save in the middle. And these saves were not 90 minutes long … So I dont think we need to worry about this.

And for the pause option, its easy to do : GTA IV cut_scenes can be paused for example.

Anyway, thats good thing for me : I like MGS cutscenes ;-) The only problem is that when one begins you never know if it will be 5 mn or 90 mn long !!!!

  16. I don’t believe that for a second. So if there’s 9 hours of cutscenes in the whole game, then that means there’s only 6 different cutscenes in the whole game? I think that’s just the typical “FFVII is 500 hours long OMG!” type of hype. It’s quite funny that people believe it, though. Any other game, and they’d laugh it off, but when it’s Metal Gear, people can easily believe they’d have hour and a half long cutscenes. :D

  17. I don’t think they’re claiming that EVERY cut-scene is 90 minutes long. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re talking about the intro movie or the ending.

  18. It’s already been said that the ending is an hour long. I doubt any of the other cutscenes will be that long. It wouldn’t be so bad if the intro was that long, and the rest a lot shorter.

  19. Must surely mean 90 minutes throughout the entire game? I want to play games not sit and watch them. If Kojima is so desperate to make movies, why doesn’t he go off and do that instead?

  20. Wouldn’t suprise me. I think the second one was close to 70 minutes. I remember because I had to be somewhere in half an hour when I finished the game, and thought it wouldn’t be a problem…

  21. Games are for playing not for sitting in front of wondering when you get to do something again.

  22. Ah, this warms a true MGS fans heart. :D Can’t wait! Already pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition from Play.
