Itagaki slags off Devil May Cry
May 24th, 2008 @ 20:45

Team Ninja boss Tomonobu Itagaki thinks Devil May Cry’s shit. Well, not quite, but not far off.
“I think Kamiya-san makes good games,” he said in this OXM interview, speaking of Devil May Cry boss Hideki Kamiya. “However, I think they, the systems, gameplay elements in his game tend to be rather shallow and he makes up with that through stylish presentation. I think if you were to compare them directly, the combat and other gameplay elements in Ninja Gaiden II are much deeper than projects that he works on.”
Itagaki, who made the comment on the eve of Ninja Gaiden II’s launch, isn’t exactly know for his modesty. Let’s hope his game lives up to it.

I’ve only played DMC 4 (a lot), I’m trying to beat Hell and Hell mode at the moment where I die in one hit and the enemies don’t) and I can see where he’s coming from. I never feel as though the enemies in DMC are fighting back, they’re just massive punch bags that throw in the occasional cheap attack…

Hes right. Gaiden has a really deep fighting system, but thats it.
DMC may be more shallow but its flashier, funnier, has stupid characters to root for, amazingly silly cut-scenes and a sense of fun.
Gaiden has none of that. It has a good system though. yeah. Great.

DMC 4 was average at best. Cut-scenes were laughable, character weren’t ‘cool’-stupid, just stupid and overall it added nothing new whatsoever to the genre.
Not saying NGII will, just saying DMC4 was pretty poor considering all the attention it gets.
caveat: IMO.

No Ryu.
You are the demons.

absolutezero: DMC is funny? You have an odd sense of humour. :p

I think DMC is hilarious.
Really you watched Dante ride a motorbike down the side of a mile high demonic tower with a perfectly straight face?
Seriously though if you can’t find anything in DMC to laugh at theres something wrong and the mocking should be moving in the other direction.

I don’t find it funny… much as I don’t find Hot Shots films funny. Just makes me cringe.

Didn’t he have a go at DMC before?
It’s pretty funny because DMC pisses over anything he’s ever done. I mean, it’s so far ahead of Ninja Gaiden, it’s embarrassing for him. I laugh at him. And I say that as someone that actually likes Ninja Gaiden. Itagaki is the student, Kamiya is the master. He needs to learn to respect.

@az: yeah, I agree that that is funny, but I’m more laughing ‘at’ the game rather than with it. It’s obviously someone’s idea of cool, without any of the self-effacing irony needed to actually make it genuinely funny.
IMO, of course.

And some think Ninja Gaiden is lame.. why does this guys opinion even matter? remind me?
Ooooh, he developed a video game that was completely oposite in almost every way. Wait, that isnt a reason.. that just proves why his opinion means jack shit and should not be taken so damn seriously.

Shawk: U mad? :p
Seriously… the guy talks shit because it’s how he is. I don’t know why people get worked up about it.

Actually though, further to my earlier comments, I reckon NG2 will be better than DMC4. I’ll actually buy NG2, I reckon, but I didn’t bother with DMC4.

I absolutely love how developers tend to explain why their games are far superior than the “big hit title” and complain about the audience/press/whatever.
This means nothing, of course, but the self-esteem is admirable. Just look at the Haze devs.

@ecu: You really didn’t miss much.

DMC4 was a perfect introduction to the series. Theres nothing wrong with it, it just did’nt shake the series up all that much.
If you enjoyed the previous titles then theres alot to love, if you never got on with DMC before then theres going to be nothing to change your mind. If you’ve never played a DMC game before then the 4th is a great place to start, with a good introduction to the style and gameplay from Nero before moving onto the proper stuff with Dante.

Well I admittedly haven’t played a DMC title before 4, and thought it was boring and lifeless.
What I really enjoyed about NG was the feeling of atmosphere and that you were part of a story. DMC was like a Hollywood ‘C’ movie.
