Microsoft won’t dump Silicon Knights if Too Human flops, says expert

May 29th, 2008 @ 07:28

Speaking to Canadian newspaper The Standard, Ian Kelso - president of non-profit interactive digital trade organisation Interactive Ontario - has claimed that Silicon Knights will still have a future with Microsoft, even if Too Human doesn’t turn into a “smash”.

“If this doesn’t turn out to be a $100-million or $500-million game, Microsoft isn’t going to turn around and say, ‘You’re no good to anyone, Silicon Knights,’ ” he said.

“I think they’ve proven their muster in the past. On the other hand, it is a fickle business. I think every title, no matter how much track record you have, you still have to prove yourself every time you go to a publisher to say, ‘This is the right idea. This is the right time.’”

Silicon Knights boss Dennis Dyack is quoted in the piece as being positive about the release of the action RPG, but hints that if anything goes wrong it’s going to be down to that nasty demo release.

“If Too Human is perceived for what it is, and people look at it, I think it will do extremely well,” Dyack said. “We’re in a really strange position, because most games are released with a ton of hype. Generally, previews don’t say anything negative at all.”

More through the link. Too Human ships in Europe on August 29.

  1. Surely SK’s relationship with Microsoft is based purely on the Too Human franchise? They’re not actually tied to Microsoft in any other way. If the first game turns out to be a disaster, why would Microsoft ever persevere? And why would they ever bother to complete the trilogy?

You always go out on a limb saying that something’s a trilogy while the first game is completely unproven. I’ve no idea why people dig themselves into a hole like that.

  2. I really think there’s a massive question mark here. God knows how much this has cost. I think “$100 million” is fantasy. personally.
