Ubidays 2008: Beyond Good & Evil 2 to be more “casual”

Speaking to Next-Gen and Ubidays yesterday, Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot said that Beyond Good & Evil 2 will be a more casual game than the original, a beloved title that flopped so hard it nearly broke its nose.

“We saw with Beyond Good & Evil that so many customers were extremely happy with the game,” he said. “We had a different audience at that time. We had more core gamers than casual gamers than we have today.

“We think the game was probably a little too difficult for the general gamers at that time. We’re going to make it more accessible and make sure that it’s really done for the new generation that’s come into videogames.”

  1. Uh oh. I knew it was too good to be true. :-(

BG&E wasn’t even remotely hard unless you were teh uber-shit.

  2. See? The first one was teh bomb :)

  3. Still, I think it’s one of precious few games we can thrust at the mainstream and say ‘Hey, its not all about explosions and tits’, so it being more approachable isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

  4. it wasn’t!! it was beautiful!

For goodness’ sake! Why not at least give players the option - difficulty settings, with optional assists for the “new generation”?
(Are they even likely to be that receptive to this game’s charms?)

The original wasn’t too difficult, in fact it was one of THE MOST “casual” games of that time.
It failed comparatively, at retail, because Ubi, as a publisher, prioritised PoP, and to a lesser extent Splinter Cell (which then got it’s own big promo push, for the sequel, Pandora Tomorrow). That’s the truth.

I wish I had such a selective memory, as some people acquire when interviewed, I really do - but then, such is the nature of spin, and the lure of that sand-blasted bandwagon! :p
