Read Edge’s 8/10 MGS4 review online
May 31st, 2008 @ 17:41
Someone’s scanned and posted up Edge’s entire Metal Gear Solid 4 review, joint lowest so far according to Metacritic, alongside Eurogamer’s identical score. The pages are huge, so you may have to wait a while for them to load. Hit this and this for the entire thing.

Bah, and to think I just wasted energy opening the magazine, and finding the page myself, when I could have clicked that link.

What’s the point in magazines existing at all, when this is such common practice?
Granted, you’re only linking to the site, but I don’t think you should be giving these places hits purely for ripping off published work. People work bloody hard on these magazines, only for some dickhead to cost them sales by scanning the review.

Haven’t read Edge in years, but having looked at the scans I see that nothing has really changed. There’s barely anything in that review that tells me what the game is like to play and whether I should buy it or not.
The writer seems more interested in his own musings about Kojima and Metal Gear rather than imparting information about the game. I didn’t find any commentary on whether the game is actually fun to play, or if the writer even actually liked it.
The closing comments and the score are therefore something of an enigma.

I thought it was a great review. Definitely the best MGS4 review so far, it lets you know what the game is like as an experience. I love Edge’s review style, they don’t feel the need to do the juvenile “This game is good because it has good graphics and sound, this game is bad because it has too many cut scenes” style of reviewing that so many seem to follow, which is great because it’s unnecessary information. Brilliant review.

OrphanageExplosion: Doesn’t that technically make it the perfect MGS review? Given most MGS fans are more interested in musing about the story and watching cutscenes than actually having fun playing the game?

Im sure they gave a low review to look for attention…

I thought the review disappeared up it’s own arse and then looped round for another circuit.

whoelse: I assume you’ve never actually read Edge then.
This isn’t a “low score”. This is, by EDGE’s standard definition of “5 = average and just about enjoyable”, an “extremely good game”. 9 is a “genuine classic”, and 10 an “industry redefining masterpiece.”
Problem with the gaming media is that its scoring system is all over the place. Where as film media has a proper system whereby a score of 7 means a decent movie, there seems to be an almost juvenile perspective amongst gamers that anything that is scored 6 or 7 is “really bad”.
Sounds to me like EDGE gave the game an extremely fair review, and a score of 8 is definately encouraging enough for me.
