Microsoft to make “spectacular, desperate” play in E3 press conference

June 12th, 2008 @ 11:44

Following talk that Microsoft is to announce two new major games in its E3 press conference, videogaming247 has learnt from trusted sources that the announcements are to be “interesting, partly spectacular and a bit desperate.”

The insider added: “Let’s put it this way: they’re worried the current line-up can’t carry Q4 for the entire Xbox brand in the core market. You’ll laugh when you see what they’re planning.”

Microsoft confirmed its E3 roster last night, listing Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Halo Wars, Too Human and Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise as its first-party offering for the Holiday season.

The firm’s E3 conference will take place on July 14 at 10.30am PST.

Consider our interest piqued.

They’re not going to get the casual market, but then neither is Sony. Nintendo owns that space.

  2. Halol 4.

  3. Halo Kart.
    Halo Superstars Tennis.
Halo and Gears of War at the Olympic Games.
Halo, Is It Me You’re Looking For (a singing game).

I’d totally buy Halo and Gears of War at the Olympic Games.

I’d say something Halo-related would be a reasonable assumption.

  6. Halo Garden.

  7. Lego Halo!

Master Chief and the Jedi Temple of Pinata.

    Super Forerunner Galaxies

  10. Grand Theft Spartan.

  11. “You Say Goodbye and I say Halo” the Fab Four fight against the Covenant while playing concerts across the galaxy to adoring fans, combines fast action first person shooter with karaoke/Guitar Hero style sections for whole family entertainment. Includes Plasma Guitar Rifle peripheral and motion sensing Beatle Wig.

If it’s Halo related why is it desperate?

I’m definitely interested though. How do you get spectacular and desperate? =D

  14. A rushed update to a major franchise?

  15. Cortana Strip Poker.

  16. It’s got to be that MS-mote thingy that’s been doing the rounds for the last few months.

    Has to be.

Halo 4 beta to be on Viva Pinata: Party in Paradise?

  18. Frag! The Halo Quiz.

  19. I reckon that motion stuff’s bollocks, personally.

  20. Blu Ray? That fits the spectacular, interesting and desperate angle perfectly.

Pat: Rushing an update wouldn’t be spectacular though. Or at least I don’t think so. Wouldn’t help with casuals either.

Blerk: I’d pay for Cortana strip poker for sure. :D

  23. PT: I got the impression it would be core stuff, so shooter/action. I honestly wasn’t told what it’s going to be, though.

  24. Wiimote-clone or BluRay. With emphasis on the latter.

Yeah, blu ray would cover spectacular and desperate. Though to be spectacular it would need to be in a new slimline 360 model. =)

  26. It’d cover desperate, but ’spectacular’? Nah.

I still think it’ll be a shoe-horning of a previous game world into a new type of game. Or a bizarre reinvention of some bit of crap from ages ago that we thought they’d forgotten. Blinx, or something. :-D

  27. Heh. Blinx 3 would be amazing.

  28. It’d be a spectacular u-turn, of course it would join the u-turns on 1080p and HDMI as well.

There’s a lot of people saying that Nintendo own the casual market here… that implies that casual market is one where people buy a console like the Wii with Wii Sports, then maybe buy one game a year when “Wii Fat Fighter” or “DS Cook yo-self Sexy!” comes out.

This casual market really doesn’t seem that appealing if you ask me. It seems to shift units but no software… certainly no third party software.

Ah maybe I’m looking at this a bit too simplistically… and anyway, from what Pat said in the story, it’s about holding the core fort.

  30. I’d laugh my fucking arse of if it was Blu-ray. That would be actually funny.

  31. Halo Beach Volleyball?

We Sports Too (packaged with Wiimote clone)

    ????

that_happy_cat: Sega would disagree that the Wii is incapable of moving third party software. Third parties can help themselves too by not releasing utter shite.

  33. Mattrick, naked and with a gun in his mouth, begging us to buy his console? That’d be spectacular and desperate.

    Or Blu-Ray.

  34. I’m going with with MS-mote and Blu Ray.

  35. Psychotext said:

    Both together? SuperMegaTon!

Ah Psychotext… you are indeed right!! :)

  37. Sorry for being late to the party but I just wanted to say that the line up they have looks pretty damn solid to me. Can’t see anything missing really except maybe a racing game.

3rd parties will have more stuff too won’t they?

So … yeah… why would they be desperate?

  38. Blerk, that Lionel Richie reference almost made me squirt coffee through my nose! Sincerely one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.

I don’t think its Blue-Ray. I would go for really desperate like fixing the damn RROD problem that would be desperate.

I can see it now MS is sitting there going ” SH!& we might actually have to fix the damn thing so people will buy it. Thats just might work “

“You’ll laugh when you see what they’re planning.”

    Avatars.

From a survey I received, with the topic: Welcome to our survey, today we have a fun and interesting survey for you about potential NEW Xbox360 features

I certainly laughed once I saw what the survey was about, then I saw this story. I’m almost certain this is connected.

  41. Psychotext said:

    July 17th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

To bump an old topic… so we certainly had spectacular, but was it desperate?

  42. I wonder if they meant that ‘You’re In The Movies’ thing. That was pretty fucking desperate.

  43. klanger13 said:

    Lips?
    Scene it?
    Avatars?

  44. Psychotext said:

    July 17th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Those are desperate? Scene it is a franchise from last year so it’s no surprise to see it back… LIPS is just another Karaoke game, it’s not like Singstar was the only one of those. Avatars? Maybe.

But I was looking more for spectacular and desperate.

  45. klanger13 said:

    July 17th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Maybe jsut desperate, not spectacular and desperate, but definitely desperate.

  46. I think you’ve got a bit of a chip on your shoulder klanger. Here have a look at this image. It’s old, I know, but just an example of what I mean:

    http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/6159/image6me4rb3zp8dq.jpg

  47. What’s that image got to do with anything?

I don’t know why Sony get chastised for “stealing” yet Microsoft and Nintendo do it and nobody bats an eyelid.

  48. It’s carrying on from a conversation that klanger and I were having in the press conferences thread. Hence I aimed the image at him.

  49. That image is so many shades of bullshit. Posting it is pure Kotaku troll-baiting stuff. I really have to wonder what sort of level this site is trying to position itself as.

Anyway, that morons can still harp on about Nintendo “inventing” analogue is the longest running joke in this culture.

I was consistent in that I didn’t watch any of the conferences. But the whole “me too” sentiment behind all of Microsoft’s headliners didn’t do anything for me whatsoever.

  50. Seriously, you can come and go as you please. It’s just light hearted. It’s “games”. It’s not serious.

    Relax.

  51. Not serious?

Blimey, you want to tell that to those poor victims who had their BC stolen from them. They way they write it seems like they’ve been through some terrible trauma and are scarred for life.

I hope they don’t hear you making fun of their plight. You’ll be in trouble.

  52. Anyway, you have to learn Shatner, that when I post on here it’s very different to me writing a news item. When I post as ‘morriss’ it’s for fun, a bit of light-hearted mickey-taking etc.

When I write something, I try to be as professional as possible.

Of you see any Kotaku-trolling creeping in to my news stories then please say so.

I find it strange that you confuse what I post under an alias on this board with “the site” itself and the image it wants to project.

As far as anyone should be concerned, I’m just a nobody posting on the internet. Like you.

  53. Ooh. I see what you did there you sly old devil. I’ll let you have that one.

  54. ;)

You gotta be more subtle than that morriss. That was terrible. It didn’t help that I had to get back to work. Do they not know I have important forums on which to vent my spleen!

  56. hehe
