Reflections “working on a whole new version” of Driver

Update: Ubisoft’s properly saying nothing.

The BBC’s posted video from a tour of Ubisoft Reflections in Newcastle, claiming the company is “working on a whole new version” of Driver.

The footage then shows cars being modelled and characters being built for cut-scenes.

The quote comes from the start of this video. We’ve just spoken to Ubisoft about this and PR claims it knows nothing about it at all. The company declined to make a comment.

This second video shows more footage from the studio in a story on the British industry struggling in the face of foreign tax cuts and, again, says that the studio is working on “the latest version of a popular driving game”, but shows footage of Emergency Heroes.

“Phone calls” are being made, apparently.

Thanks, Whizzo.

  1. Didn’t realise the cop car thing was Emergency Heroes, I was half asleep when the report came on the telly this morning! :-)

  2. Which version of Driver is that on the telly at the start?

  3. Saw the Beeb story on Breakfast this morning. They didn’t even mention the company they were at or the game they were working on. The footage of the game so far didn’t exactly look next-gen, in fact it looked less impressive than Driv3r and about on par with Midtown Madness 3. It must have been really early code, whatever they are doing.

The vids linked above are different to what I saw too.

  4. “Which version of Driver is that on the telly at the start?” looks like Parallel Lines.

  5. Woo hoo!

    My old offices!

    Go Gareth, Go!

  6. Well I’ll be bumswizzled.

I liked Reflections, always thought that Driver and Stuntman were ace series. Let’s hope (no, let’s PRAY) that any new version of driver chucks away the idea of out-of-car action and just concentrates on highly detailed cinematic tooling about in cars rather than pissarsing about on foot.

  7. Thinking about it…did Ubisoft not grab the Stuntman licence recently as well?

    Now that’d be good…

  8. Nah, they sold it to THQ who decided ‘not to persue the brand’ after Stuntman: Ignition.

Stuntman was only supposed to be a budget release game for the PS2, but it ballooned into something much bigger than it should have.

Its gameplay is very linear and limited, so I wouldn’t expect anyone to be clambering after the IP any time soon.

  9. Isn’t this game a PS3 exclusive?

  10. A leak about a sequel that’s *not* come from Intellisponse?

  11. Not sure on platform. When I spoke to Ubi they honestly knew nothing about it.

  12. They must know what Reflections are up to though as they’re part of them now!
