GTA movie is impossible, thanks to Ron Howard
June 20th, 2008 @ 19:50
According to this Deadline Hollywood Daily piece, a GTA movie will never happen because of a 1977 movie of the same name
The Ron Howard film is said to be the source of a legal settlement in which Rockstar supposedly agreed to never make a Grand Theft Auto film as long as Fox never makes a video game based on Howard’s work.

Ehrm.. Aple promised never to have anything to do with music. See how well that turned out.
The power of the dollar compels thee. And there is enough of it to eat Mr Ron Howard for breakfast.

it wouldn’t have worked anyway

Yes, Dan Houser himself said that a movie of GTA would not work.
… but you never know. The prospect of making tons of money may alter all good intentions of not ruining the brand …

How could a GTA movie NOT work? The games are practically movies anyway. Vice City is basically Scarface: The Game (well, before they actually made a Scarface game), and it takes bits from every American gangster movie ever made. All they need to do is slap together a mob story and give it a couple of car chases and shoot outs and BAM - GTA the movie.

@ ecu
Your description to do the movie perfectly shows why it would not work!

Why? If Tarantino’s next movie was like that, everyone would go see it. If it was called GTA, everyone would say it was shit because it was based on a game. A GTA movie could definitely work..
