Rage ambitions forced id to get serious about AI, says Hooper
June 24th, 2008 @ 10:02
id’s Matt Hooper said at GDC Paris yesterday that the design ambitions for post-apolcalyptic action title Rage have forced the company to take on an AI designer as well as an AI programmer.
“Our gameplay goals for Rage are so much more than we’ve ever had before, that if you don’t have an AI designer working with an AI programmer, then you’re just going to be in bad shape,” he said. “So we’ve been forced to do that, just by the breadth of our design goals.”

I’m not sure whether to be pleased by this or slightly worried that id feel they’ve been “forced” to get someone in to do the AI, rather than waking up to the fact that having enemies shuffle left and right bit whilst you shoot at them doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny in a modern FPS any more.
Surely this should have been towards the top of the development plan from day one?

I guess this means they’ll have _two_ types of closets for monsters to jump out of.

It’s a game featuring cars so it’ll be monster garages this time around.
