Gosen: Microsoft getting “aggressive” in Europe

June 26th, 2008 @ 18:53

Over on MCV, Microsoft marketing chap David Gosen has said aggressive investment in the European market will ensure 360 comes out on top this generation.

“We have some very aggressive plans in terms of investing in this market to be successful,” he said. “We are in Europe to win. We’re not here to come second or third.”

“We are going to invest to win in Europe. There is no question about that. We understand the challenge in the region. We understand what we need to do to continue to drive the growth of the business. What we need to do is not just pay lip service to this but really invest.”

We’re saying nothing.

They’ve got to be joking. The 360 is getting whipped in Europe. Over a year head start, cheaper, launched with no competition and the PS3 is ….. ahead and pulling away. They should concentrate on holding the US where they are still very strong; Europe is almost certainly lost and there was never a battle worth speaking of in Japan.

RevolutionBlues: MS would like a word with you about being behind in Europe. ;)

That aside, of course it makes sense to focus on Europe more than anywhere else. They’re totally dead in Japan (and the PS3 is heading that way) and they’ve got the most to gain in Europe - not just for this gen, but for the next.

@Psychotext - I never believe MS figures because they always refuse to answer the questions “Is this shipped or sold?” and “Does this include RRoD replacement units”.

“…they’ve got the most to gain in Europe - not just for this gen, but for the next…”

    True.

You don’t really need to believe MS. They quoted GFK and Chart Track who would have said they were wrong if they had misrepresented them (they have in the past on other things).

  5. Europe is where the battle will be fought, for sure. It’ll be nice for us to be the focus of some attention for a change.

  6. @ Blerk: True say, shame that we keep getting shafted on release dates, hardware bundles and online content then, eh?

  7. Only by Sony. Microsoft have actually treated Europe quite well so far.

A stepping up of the console war with a focus on Europe would be really nice from a consumer point of view. Thing is, I can’t really see what more Microsoft can do - the price of the 360 is already very competitive with the Wii, let alone the PS3. Do they mean more marketing?

The UK market seems pretty solid, but it’s the continental side that just seems to be suckered in by the Playstation brand. And that’s in spite of the shafting Sony continuously give to the PAL territories on everything from release dates to hardware bundles. I agree with Blerk - Microsoft have actually been quite good to Europe.

  9. Attempting to reach a broader market would help Microsoft in Europe, although their previous attempts at this have been somewhat half-arsed to say the least. To be honest, they should just concentrate on the UK - it’s their most popular territory in Europe anyway, and the place where they’re most likely to find success.

I’m not sure why they haven’t made a bigger deal out of the whole ‘third-party games are usually better on 360′ thing, tbh. It would seem a rather obvious line of attack to me, but they really don’t seem to “big up” the hardware very much for some reason.
