No to Diablo III on consoles
June 29th, 2008 @ 22:10
Yesterday’s Diablo III announcement caused nerdworld to explode into hysterics and inhaler usage, but those hoping for a console version can basically forget it.
Joystiq had a chat with the game’s lead designer, Jay Wilson, and the very first question asked was, “Do you have any plans for Diablo on consoles?” And the answer? “We don’t have any plans.”
Fin.

Shock horror!

Craziness - seriously. Perfectly suited, but probably best to chop that nose off.

Good. Fuckin’ console lightweights.
June 30th, 2008 at 5:02 am
Console…lightweights…? Riiiiiiiiight…
I kinda wanted a PS3 version because I wasn’t sure my laptop could handle it, and my PC is almost dead as it is.

No but seriously, the game is perfectly suited to the PC. I don’t see anybody getting upset when the 360 gets an exclusive game.
June 30th, 2008 at 7:03 am
360 never gets exclusive games. They always come out on PC.
June 30th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Being honest I don’t really understand it. With the state PC gaming is in today and the huge console market, porting it over seems the logical thing to do.
Anyway, what do I know?
June 30th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Given how long it takes them to actually finish anything, perhaps it’s just a case of logistics - don’t get distracted by ports until you’ve actually shipped the game to the platforms you’re actually developing for.
June 30th, 2008 at 8:46 am
But given the the way that PC/360 games seem to be “easily” ported, don’t you think it might appear in the future?
It’d probably outsell Halo 3 would it not?
June 30th, 2008 at 9:05 am
I have to agree that it would make a lot of business sense to port Diablo 3 over to the 360, even if they don’t bother with the PS3. Seems like an easy win.
Mind you, it’s nice of them to give PC gamers the chance for a little bit of smugness versus their console-owning brethren, for a change.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:07 am
Yeah sure. Even if it comes a year later I doubt many would mind. It would literally sell a few million more.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:09 am
They’re probably going out of their way to highlight it as a “computer” game first and foremost to avoid all those whiners complaining about “dumbing down for consoles”.
But yes, a 360 port would seem like a no-brainer.

I’ve never played a diablo game. What’s the control system like? Complex?
(Generic journo question time): How would the K+M controls port over to a controller? IS it feasible or are there simply too many commands.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:14 am
two mouse buttons, the number keys, and directions. I dounbt a console would lack the buttons. Besides, Diablo has already appeared on the first Playstation.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Oh right yeah. Of course. Totally forgot (obviously)
June 30th, 2008 at 10:37 am
They even highlighted the simplicity of the controls in the gameplay vid. Maybe a port to a console which has a harddrive as standard might be a little easier too ;).
June 30th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
maybe console gamers should upgrade to a real gaming machine that uses the rather awesome combination of a keyboard + mouse?
June 30th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Maybe PC gamers shouldn’t be so elitist?
June 30th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
*takes off robe*
go fetch me my slippers you filthy console wench.
June 30th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
I’m a gamer, console and PC. I’ve just never understood the possessiveness people have over games remaining exclusive to their chosen platforms.
Think how much PC gamers have benefited from MS’s willingness to have 360 exclusive titles make their way over to the PC for an instance of it working in reverse.
