Rock Band 2 confirmed for 360 in September, “other platforms” later
June 30th, 2008 @ 10:32

According to this IGN report, Rock Band 2 will ship for 360 this September, with “other platforms” hitting later in the year.
While all peripherals from the first game will work with the sequel, upgraded versions will be available in a bundle pack. Harmonix isn’t revealing what these upgrades are just yet.
“As successful as the original Rock Band continues to be, we’ve now had the benefit of the last eight months to listen to our fans’ requests and to build upon that foundation,” said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix. “Rock Band 2 is a second-generation band game that will elevate the music game experience to the next level.”
There’s a Q&A with lead designer Dan Teasdale here.

“Upgraded” peripherals? That’ll piss off everyone who just shelled out £150 on the current lot.

i.e. me. Actually I’m waiting for my bundled copy of the first one just now. :/
This really is a stinker. But I can see why they think they need an update, just as Activision announced their sensitive drum pads…

Some really nice details in the IGN interview, including provision being added for instrument playing vocalists - having the game acknowledge that trend, in a noticeable way. Also, Harmonix encouraging peripheral makers to produce instruments, for the Rock Band platform, may be another plus. Harmonix rep also mentioned something related to recognising that some may want to progress from expert mode, to real instruments, and adding something for that.
It seems clear to me, that they really have done the community liaising and research, from RB1, to make the sequel very likely to be worth looking forward to, and buying!
