Sony to launch a fourth version of PS2 this year
July 3rd, 2008 @ 06:39
According to this India Times piece, Sony’s planning to release a fourth version of the PS2 hardware before Diwali, this year to be held on October 28.
That piece claims the new machine will launch in both India and Europe simultaneously, and will feature “slimmer, sleeker and more suave” styling over the current version. Apparently, it won’t have an external AC adapter.

So it’s the same one they launched in Japan last year, then?

Love the way the article has a picture of a PS3.

Is it really necessary for Sony to do this? Surely the existing slimline PSTwo is perfectly fine - I appreciate there’s still a decent market for it, but surely all this money going on redesigning this aged console could be better spent… I dunno, by reducing the cost of the PS3?

It’s the “Third World ploy” innit. Infest poorer markets with cheaper hardware to prop up the PS3 business. Maybe they think they need a new model to push harder into India.

@patlike, according to the article it is for the SCEE region too. Why on earth bring out another PS2 in the region that is holding the ps3 up?

Mart: The one in the Times does. Unless the new one has slot loading and Playstation 3 written on it.
