Home beta launch will be “fully robust,” says SCEA
July 4th, 2008 @ 10:13
PSN boss Eric Lempel has told Next-Gen that this autumn’s promised Home launch will be the real article - it just won’t be the finished product.
“The reason we’ve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy,” he said. “Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”
Home’s roll-out was described last month by PSN director Susan Panico as being similar in plan to Gmail’s release, where the initial “beta” was in fact the full product with rough edges.
An autumn release for the service is now looking increasingly solid, with no execs commenting on the issue deviating from the time-frame.

They’ve said all along, though, that Home’s launch didn’t correspond to the equivalent of a retail “release date”. They’ve been consistent with their message throughout, on this point.

Based on what I’ve been hearing from Beta testers… this may be robust, but it wont be particularly interesting.

I want a Beta code and I’m upset Sony hasn’t sent me one.

That’ll teach you to be an evil Microsoft fanboy then, won’t it? Eh? EH?

Really? I’ve been told the opposite. I’ve heard its really good fun and that the WarHawk stuff ‘need to be seen to be believed’.
Could be BS tho…

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen Home and ‘fun’ mentioned in the same sentence.

Not read any of the many online previews then?

Sounds like it could be engaging, tbh. After all, Second Life is popular enough, why not Sony’s Home? There are plenty of people out there who would love to live vicariously as a hunk/babe in a simulated world. IMHO, this is the shape of things to come, for better or worse.

Home is really going to be a suck it and see type thing.
I can see the appeal, you only have to look at the explosion of social networks and the success of second life to see why Sony have gone for this sort of thing. I just have trouble seeing the appeal after a cursory hour mess around.
It’ll be interesting to see how it goes though, I hope developers will come up with innovative stuff to make me want to use Home.
