Pardo: Diablo III “theoretically possible” on consoles

Speaking to Eurogamer at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational last weekend, company design boss Rob Pardo muddied the issue of whether or not Diablo III will make it to consoles further by saying the move isn’t outside the realms of possibility.

“I think it’s theoretically possible. It would have some control changes that I think you’d have to make… But it’s probably, of our major franchises, the one that’s most console friendly, for sure,” he said.

Pardo added: “Out of StarCraft, Warcraft or WOW, Diablo would be the easiest game to translate. But it would still take a bit of work.”

Eurogamer’s also carrying an excellent Diablo III preview today, which is a must-read as far as we’re concerned. And we’re never wrong.

I watched the 20 min dev walkthrough and have to say that the game looks utterly, utterly fantastic.

Why 30,000 people have signed some stupid petition to get the devs to revert to the dark colour palette of Diablo 2 is beyond me, but I do sincerely hope they get totally ignored.

Loved the fight at the end of the vid, and just when you think it’s over a million skeletons appear and the screen fades to black.

Fucking awesome, no other way to describe it.

  2. I don’t understand what these ‘major control changes’ are. You change it so you move your guy with the stick instead of pointing and clicking. You map the two attack buttons onto the buttons. You put the menu on to another button. Maybe you could have the quick menus mapped to the shoulders.

What exactly am I missing here? He makes it sound like it’s a head-scratching problem. Has he never played Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance?

I’m going to map this so it works with my 360 pad anyway :D

Blerk, it’s not quite as straightforward as that. There are things like area of effect spells that require you to click where you want them, and they’d have to change the way you identify and pick up loot etc. Plus of course combat would become direction driven rather than clicking on the monster you want to attack.

It’s certainly doable, and probably doable without fundamentally changing the pace or essence of the game, but it’s not as simple as it sounds.

Well said. Bunch of whiny, disrespectful fucking idiots.

    @Dr.Haggard - Too true ^_^

  8. Agreed about the colours.

And I would LOVE Diablo III to come out on the PS3, because I’m willing to bet it’d be a bitch to play it with the touchpad on my laptop. Still, I’m getting it on whichever comes first, probably - I’ll find a USB mouse if I have to!

  9. Pigs could fly. Theoretically. All they need is wings strong enough to carry them.

  10. Oh, please, Oh please put this on the 360 or PS3. My shoulder can’t handle 100 hours of computer gaming!

  11. I reckon you may have to patch your shoulder up, hokie. I’m not convinced a console version’s going to be happening any time soon. Hope springs eternal, though.
