Banjo features ability to “twist the controller,” says Lobb
July 9th, 2008 @ 07:23

Well, there we are. In what appears to be a tacit admission that Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts features some form of motion sensing, Microsoft’s Ken Lobb has claimed that controller movement will allow things to be moved in the game-world in an IGN dev commentary movie.
“The primary function that Kazooie has in the game is she carries this wrench, and the wrench is used for many different things,” he said.
“One of the things that the wrench is used for is to turn these devices. So you basically grab with the wrench and then you twist the controller around and it’ll move different things in the game.”
The video’s after the break, and the game looks gorgeous. It shows the hub-world of Showdown Town, and everything’s littered with button icons for the normal 360 pad, so are we looking at some sort of add-on for motion stuff? We’ll know next Monday, no doubt.

I hope it’s not just me that the vid won’t play for.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Oh God, Microsoft. Please, no - not another Sixaxis.
I remain fairly unconvinced by the game. The hub world looks gorgeous, but it’s… empty. And boring. Wander around finding boxes and bringing them back while nothing else happens? I hope there’s more to it than that.

Still can’t play the bloody video.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Works fine morriss. You probably just suck at computers.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:33 am
When I press play I just get some red writing at the bottom saying “unsupported format” and that’s it.
Firefox 3.

Ah, the old “morriss is teh suck” message.

Doesn’t work in IE either.
Wtf? Vista just updated this morning,, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:38 am
Oh, Vista. You should’ve said, lack-of-codecs boy.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Well, I’ve got K-Lite and FFDShow but I’m not sure that’s got anything to do with it.
Bollocks.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Here, try installing this.
Edit: Oh, you already did. Vistalol.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Just tried installing it. Apparently I had an older version of the other codecs.
Still doesn’t work though.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:51 am
What version of Flash have you got?
July 9th, 2008 at 8:54 am
You have version 9,0,124,0 installed
July 9th, 2008 at 8:56 am
It’s not that, then. Looks like you’re screwed.
Did you try pressing the ‘hi-res’ button? That launches a different player on IGN’s own site.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Yeah. Doesn’t play either.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:59 am
It obviously ‘wasn’t meant to be’. It’s a sign.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:59 am
Also, for some reason, IGN is taking literally ages to load for me. Their home page just took “too long to respond.”

Try this version. Aspect ratio’s all wrong, but you might be able to play it, at least.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:07 am
That played fine. Nice one. (y)
Looks brilliant.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:12 am
I reckon that looks like one of the most interesting games I’ve seen this year. And it “feels” Banjo. I can’t wait.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:16 am
It looks very ‘crative’!
Gettit?!
July 9th, 2008 at 9:24 am
If you look very close to the beginning of the clip and look at the pad Kazooie’s holds then it looks like a bigger than expected battery block underneath - maybe the add-on?
July 9th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Would make more sense than a whole new pad, for sure. They could bundle it with the game, like in the N64 days. Or these days where every other Wii game comes with a novelty controller.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Perhaps you see the motion thing after Kazooie has finished messing with the original controller (they jump out of the cutscene). Maybe, who knows. We should probably find out in about a week.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Add-on, I reckon. It’d be the perfect game to push it with, especially if it’s going to be used in other “casual” stuff.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Here you go. A screen-grab for ya.
Edit: Actually, looking on the ‘net it doesn’t appear to be any different to a normal pad.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Nah, I just checked on my 360 pad. The pack on that grab is exactly the same depth compared to the triggers as the normal controller.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Couple of other things of note in the vid. A Nintendo 64 in the background at the start & a 360 with a green HD - maybe the new 60Gb one?
Oh and it still tears like a bastard when there is too much to see :).
July 9th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Eagle eyes. And true as well.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:53 am
It’s unlikely that they’ll use the battery slot for an add-on. It’s more likely to be one like the chat pad.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Ja, was saying the same to morriss this morning.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Twisting the controller is so mind-meltingly groundbreaking that I can scarcely cope with the concept.
July 9th, 2008 at 10:03 am
It was the first thing Pat said as he leaned over me to open the curtains.
July 9th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I wouldn’t say no to a Banjo controller for the 360.

Ughhh… oh well, everybody has motion sensing now… Hopefully it will not be a one-off type of deal and is supported by other games. I still have tose damn Dreamcast Samba de Amigo Maracas in the basement. What a waste that was…
