No price cut for PlayStation 3 “just yet”

July 10th, 2008 @ 15:24

Signal Hill analyst Todd Greenwald has told GameRush that an imminent PS3 price cut is unlikely due to the victory of Blu-ray over HD-DVD and a strong line of exclusive titles, such as GT5 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

“We do not expect a price cut on the PS3 just yet,” Greenwald said.

“Sony appears to be focused on profitability right now, and actually has some momentum behind it now with the Blu-ray win, and its strongest line-up of exclusive titles since the console’s launch (Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, etc).”

The comments come, of course, in light of an near-certain price cut for Xbox 360 at E3 next week.

Kind of makes sense. I’d be surprised if there was a price cut now, put it that way.

I wonder if Sony have anything in store for E3… that Wal-Mart rumour of a new SKU coming in August got a few people talking. I guess a Dualshock 3 pack-in is the most obvious one, but it’d be nice if there was something more to get excited about.

I’m [ ] <– that close to buying one now… once E3 is out of the way.

  2. I keep reading that as “Silent Hill analyst”. :-D

I’ll be surprised if they don’t lob a bit off the price before Christmas, but I don’t think they’ll do it yet.

Have to say, though… that “strongest list of exclusive titles isnce the console’s launch” still has a distinctive whiff of meh about it. Where’s all the stuff you used to do that I liked, Sony? :-(

  3. Was using a PS3 at work all week. It’s SO nice, wicked interface with everything working really smoothly, and that new online store is genuinely lovely. But it REALLY needs to be £100 cheaper and come with a Dual Shock controller and a free (good) game to be worth the purchase.
