Kim sees FFXIII as key to Japanese development door

July 16th, 2008 @ 19:50

In a lengthy interview with 1UP, Microsoft head Shane Kim said that the capture of Final Fantasy XIII should unlock many doors in Japan.

“Well, the Final Fantasy XIII announcement has some beneficial side-effects,” said Kim.

“The more games of this nature, and of the Devil May Crys and Resident Evils, that we secure on 360 opens doors for us in Japan, and gets developers over there interested in the 360, so it’s a step-by-step process.

“Take Capcom for example: they took a chance with us with Dead Rising and Lost Planet, and have had great success, with both of those titles selling over a million units each,” he continued.

“Japan is obviously a very unique market to crack and gain support in, but I think we’re making good headway with what we’ve accomplished on 360 so far, and we’ll continue to surprise you.”

  1. How’s this going to help them in Japan, if it’s not even going to come out in Japan? Even if it does, it won’t be until the PS3 version has sold millions. They’ve already proved that RPG’s on the 360 over there only make a tiny boost in the sales of the console.

They’re probably talking about getting the devs to look up and pay attention. I suppose if Square are putting FF on the console then anything is possible…

    …though success in Japan for the 360 isn’t. :D

  3. I don’t think Microsoft are really interested in succeeding in Japan any more - it’s obviously a lost cause. What they are interested in is attracting Japanese developers to make games for their machine rather than just defaulting to Sony like they usually do. That draws Japan-o-philes into the 360 in the West and (coupled with an ultra-strong Nintendo) nobbles Sony in Japan.

It’s perfectly evil, but quite clever. “We know we can’t win, but we can stop you from winning as well”.
