Blizzard’s “money hats” mean PC gaming isn’t dead, says Newell

July 24th, 2008 @ 20:22

Speaking to Develop, Valve boss Gabe Newell has said the success of Blizzard’s titles means PC gaming is alive and kicking.

“I mean, go ask Rob Pardo if PC gaming is dead – if he can take the time out from making money hats, I’m sure he’ll give you a really eloquent explanation of why probably the most valuable entertainment franchise of the moment is PC-specific,” he said.

Please, everyone. Please. Stop asking people is PC gaming is “dead”. It isn’t. It’s very obvious. There are millions and millions of people playing PC games. Please.

  1. Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

  2. PC gaming so isn’t dead, though. Really not. At all. He’s right, I reckon: Blizzard pretty much proves it. People just have to make the “right” games.

  3. PC gaming isn’t “dead” but only a few companies are actually making decent money, if it weren’t for WoW Blizzard would be out of business with there [very picky] development model.

The PC games buying market simply isn’t big enough to accommodate all the developers out there so only “key/right” titles only ever do well.

You really think they only got WoW as a financial boost? :) They’ve been using their ‘very picky development model’ since WarCraft II, hell, if you knew Diablo 1 was originally pitched as a turnbased game then you know what Blizzard can do to change things back or to cancel/dump it (Pax Imperia II, WarCraft Adventures, StarCraft: Ghost) and their policy pays off, not just by the big WoW sales but also by the huge success of both StarCraft and Diablo. If WoW would only have been a modest hit à la Everquest II for example then they still would have been able to do their thing as much as they like.

And while they make cashloads of money, that doesn’t mean other companies can’t make a profit (extra even since they’ve got no platform owner company limiting their options/upping the retail price due to licenses) on PC too. Some of the (exclusive) heavy-hitters on PC of last year have well surpassed, reached or are near the 1 million mark already (Crysis, STALKER, The Orange Box, SupCom all got past 1 million, The Witcher is almost there with 800.000 sold copies).

Even console devs would love to reach such numbers as everyone realises you can’t always have a smash hit like CoD4 or Halo 3, just like PC devs realise they probably won’t beat WoW, The Sims, the rest of the Blizzard-franchises or other big names which always rake in quite a big number of PC sales (Age of Empires, C&C, Half-Life, etc.).

pat’s got a point, journalists should stop asking the “PC Gaming is dead?”-question and instead give us more juicy info about the games themselves.
